As we have just entered into the first month of the meteorological winter, there is always the possibility that there might be some precipitation which falls as snow, but anything which does fall as snow still counts towards the overall rainfall total for the area in question. The purpose of this thread is therefore to report those rainfall totals for the month of December 2018 whenever possible, and regardless of what that precipitation is actually falling as.

In the end, a total of 5.4 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 6.2mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, a further 0.2 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 7am this morning, along with 0.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 6.0 mm, the total for this winter so far to 6.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 584.4 mm as at 7am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 7.0 mm, the total for this winter so far to 7.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 570.4 mm as at 7am this morning.

I will add though, that regardless of what happens during this month, 2018 will go down as a drier than average year at both of those stations in terms of the actual rainfall amounts because the only thing which will prevent that from happening is if we were to get so much rain during this month that this amounted to more than double the amount which would be required to make this month our wettest December on record, and there is very little chance of that happening.

This shows that 2018 has been a very dry year in terms of the actual rainfall amounts here with that being largely due to the run of drier than average months which we had between May and October (which is our driest month of this year so far), although February was also very dry here as well.

However, it is still possible for this year to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of official rain days since it has been a completely different story in that regard, in this part of the world.

In the end, a total of 4.4 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 4.6mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

However, today has been completely dry so far at both of those stations as at 8am this morning.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 10.8 mm, the total for this winter so far to 10.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 589.2 mm as at 8am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 12.8 mm, the total for this winter so far to 12.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 576.2 mm as at 8am this morning.

This has not been a dry start to this month by any means in this part of the world and yet somehow, the various other posts on this thread show that we are still lagging quite a lot behind the rest of the UK when it comes to this month's rainfall so if anyone has less than what I have reported for this month so far, I would be more than happy for them to report that here.

One obvious reason for that though comes from the manner in which certain weather systems have been taking a more southerly track and therefore, by-passing this part of the world altogether. However, I am noticing that even on those days when we are getting quite a decent amount of rainfall, I am noticing that this is still being eclipsed by what the rest of the UK appear to be getting on those days and if anyone would light to shed some light onto why that is happening, I would be more than happy to ready such a reply.

In the end, a total of 0.2 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 0.2mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, a further 2.2 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 7am this morning, along with 2.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 13.2 mm, the total for this winter so far to 13.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 591.6.4 mm as at 7am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 15.4 mm, the total for this winter so far to 15.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 570.4 mm as at 7am this morning.

At the moment, rainfall totals for this month in this part of the world are running at no more than average and although last month was wetter than average overall, it wasn't all that much wetter than average. I'm not exactly concerned about water shortages here in Edinburgh but we have built up one of the UK's biggest rainfall deficits over the course of the year and although we have been getting more rain over the last month or so than what we have been getting for a while, there is still nothing really happening to suggest that we have even started to make up that deficit.

In order for that to happen, we need to be getting a run of considerably wetter than average months which at the very least means that the amount of rain which we get needs to be at least on par with what just about everyone else is reporting here. At the moment, the fact that we are getting more rain is a step in the right direction, but that isn't yet enough.
