First of all, I would like to wish everyone a very happy St. Andrew's Day.

As well as being the day of Scotland's patron saint (which I believe, should be greatly honoured and celebrated), it is also the final day of the meteorological autumn of course, which has started off on a windy note with the wind still gusting up to 32.3mph from the SW as at midnight.

Yesterday was an incredibly wet day and in the end, a total of 13.0 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 12.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This makes yesterday the wettest day of this month at both of those stations and also, the second wettest day of this autumn at both of these stations. In both case, yesterday came within just 0.3 mm of being the wettest day of this autumn in the end.

As a result of there being too much cloud around as well as far too much wind, the temperatures are still refusing to drop and so, the temperature at midnight was 8.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 8°C at Edinburgh Airport and 8.0°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which for all three of these stations, isn't much different from what was recorded at 4pm yesterday afternoon (in the case of the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, the temperature was actually slightly higher at midnight than what it was at 4pm yesterday afternoon).

This morning is much drier than yesterday with varying amounts of cloud and some showers in the nearby vicinity which have yet to affect us in any way.

It is still very windy as well with maximum wind gusts throughout this morning getting up to 40.4mph from the SSW at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was 6.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 7°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as we have just gone through yet another frost-free horror show due to there being too much cloud around and far too much wind which resulted in the temperatures refusing to drop during the night.

This has been happening all too often during this month and the result of this is that even if the temperature drops to below freezing before midnight (which is very unlikely, going by the latest forecasts), the number of official air frosts during both this month and this autumn will now go down as being below average at both Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh (there are no such official long term averages given for Edinburgh Airport that I know of).

This morning has brought a little bit of sunshine with a total of half an hour of sunshine being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

However, it is also still very windy with the wind at Edinburgh Gogarbank still gusting up to 37.9mph from the SW as at 12 noon.

In addition to that, there has also been a number of showers during this morning which have now resulted in a total of 0.6 mm of rain being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon, along with 0.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This now makes today, the 13th day in a row which has failed to stay completely dry at either of those stations.

In addition to that, this also means that this month will now go down as being wetter than average overall at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, regardless of what happens between now and midnight.

This morning's minimum temperature was 5.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 12 noon was 7.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 7°C at Edinburgh Airport and 7.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Just popped into t'town to get some bits and the low Autumn sun felt positively pleasantly warm on my face, especially as winds has fallen lighter. 12.6 C.

More of that, please.  I'd be more than happy to experience this via a Bartlett-high type set up throughout the winter.

The weather during this afternoon went from bad to worse for a while as those earlier showers then merged into a much longer spell of heavy rain although that has now cleared away for now.

In the end, a total of just 42 minutes of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank. Even a decent total for today wouldn't have been enough to prevent this month from going down as being duller than average overall, and I was hoping that the switch to the more westerly regime which we are now in might have helped us to get those more improved sunshine totals. Sadly though, that hasn't happened and instead, today has just carried on that run of poor sunshine totals which we are still in, and which has caused this month to be duller than average in the end after having looked like being substantially sunnier than average for so long.

It's not quite as windy just now as it was earlier on, but the wind at Edinburgh Gogarbank was still gusting up to 29.8mph from the SW at 4pm this afternoon.

This afternoon's heavy rain has now increased today's rainfall total so far to 5.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 5.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 4pm this afternoon. This means that today will now go down as yet another official rain day at both of those stations, and also means that just another 0.2 mm of rain now needs to fall at Edinburgh Gogarbank between now and midnight in order for this month to go down as wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts (this effectively means that any more recorded rainfall for there during today will be enough to clinch that).

Once again, today's maximum temperature was reached during the early hours of this morning and this was 8.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 8°C at Edinburgh Airport and 7.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 4.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 5°C at Edinburgh Airport and 4.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

There are still a few showers around just now and although this hasn't resulted in any further additions to today's rainfall so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 8pm this evening, a further 0.2 mm of rain has been recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank since my last report.

The result of this is that for both of those stations, this month will now go down as being wetter than average both in terms of the number of official rain days, and in terms of the actual rainfall amounts regardless of what happens between now and midnight. That is quite significant because it means that this month has now ended the long of run of months stretching all the way back to (and including) May which were not wetter than average at both of those stations in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

The temperatures dropped by quite a bit after this afternoon's heavy rain moved through but although it's not quite as windy just now as it was earlier on, the temperatures are now already refusing to drop due to there still being too much cloud and too much wind around and in fact, the temperatures have actually gone back up a bit over the last few hours. That in turn has sealed this month's fate as a warmer than average month at all three of my local stations although that was never in any doubt, anyway.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8pm this evening was 4.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 5°C at Edinburgh Airport and 4.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Looks like today will be the first day since the 18th to stay dry and there's been almost double the amount of sunshine than during the entirety of the past 11 days with 3.9 hours recorded. However it's noticeable just how much lower the sun is in the sky now and even at lunchtime it barely clears the roofs of houses.

Unfortunately, while we may have got rid of the gloom the mind-numbing temperatures are still here with temp not dropping much due to the wind. 4.2C currently from a max of 7.4C. If it's not one thing scuppering anything remotely interesting from occurring it's another
