Much colder than of late under clear skies.

In the end, 8.2 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday along with 7.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This makes yesterday the wettest day of this month so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank and the second wettest day of this month so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was 0.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 2°C at Edinburgh Airport and 0.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, thus already making this the coldest night of this month so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank and the second coldest night of this month so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Got down to as low as 0.7 c at 1 am last night, but since then low cloud has filled in the sky and is now (at 8.30 am) 6.0 c & 86% h with overcast skies. Hopefully things may brighten up again soon going by the latest satellite grabs.

This morning has started off on a dull and rather depressing note as we have entered into yet another boring grey nothingness with yet more constant grey skies. The difference this time though is that it has obviously not been like this all the time because at long, long last, I can finally report that an official air frost has now been recorded at all three of local stations for only the first time this month with that having set in during the early hours of this morning before it then clouded over.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was -1.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -2°C at Edinburgh Airport and -1.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which clearly makes last night the coldest night of this month so far at all three of my local stations.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was 0.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -1°C at Edinburgh Airport and 0.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

EDIT

I can now report that light rain has now set in here in Edinburgh. Given the very low temperatures, it is possibly surprising that this is only falling as rain given that the dew points at two of my local stations (Edinburgh Airport and Edinburgh Gogarbank) were still below freezing at 8am this morning.

However, the dew point at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has now risen to above freezing, and I live in the north of Edinburgh which is the very part of this city which is the least likely to get any snow due to my low elevation and close proximity to the coast. I know that there are at least two other members of this forum who live in the south of Edinburgh which is higher up and further away from the coast, so there is every possibility that they might have seen a flake or two of snow in their area.

A rather damp, dark and gloomy morning means that nothing in the way of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

However, this has resulted in a total of 0.4 mm of rain being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon, along with 1.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh (where today will therefore go down as yet another official rain day as a result) and although those totals are much smaller than of late, this means that today is now the fifth day in a row which has failed to stay completely dry at either of those stations.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 12 noon was just 2.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 3°C at Edinburgh Airport and 3.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh so it is also rather cold out there as well.

Much colder then yesterday.

Today we have barely scrapped 7C unlike yesterday when we approached 9.5C.

Sunny skies, chilly east wind, and misty horizons have made it feel wintery.

There has been no improvement in the weather here since my last report.

In fact, this has been quite an eery day in many ways. At the moment, we now just under a month away from the winter solstice so at this time of year, the days are very short and the Sun even at midday is very low in the sky and close to the horizon even when it is shining. When that is combined with overcast conditions such as what we have seen today, the result of that is that it never actually gets completely light which means that I then have to keep my house lights on all day when I am indoors.

Today was one of those days which was exactly like that and in the end, nothing in the way of sunshine was recorded for today in the end at Edinburgh Gogarbank. That makes today the second completely sunless day of this month and the fourth sunless day of this autumn. About a week ago, this month was looking like a dead cert to go down as being sunnier than average, especially since we don't actually need all that many more hours of sunshine in order for that to happen. However, today has now been the second sunless day in the space of the last four days. With more dull weather in the forecast as well and the very short days at this time of year, there is no longer any certainty that this month will actually end up being sunnier than average overall after all.

In addition to that, there has also been some rain at times which has lifted today's rainfall totals so far as at 4pm this afternoon to just 0.6 mm at Edinburgh Edinburgh, but along with much larger total of 1.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Today has also been quite a cold day, although the temperature is still going up. This means that I can't report any actual maximum temperature for today, so the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 4.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 5°C at Edinburgh Airport and 5.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This evening is still rather cloudy and grotty with little bits of rain at times which has now increased today's rainfall totals so far as at 8pm this evening to 0.8 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 2.4 mm at the botanic Gardens in Edinburgh (the much higher total at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh is probably due to that station's close proximity to the east coast and the fact that the rain has been largely breaking up further inland with very little of that getting to Edinburgh Gogarbank as a result of that station also being further inland).

There is very little in the way of wind around, but the fact that there is too much cloud around means that the temperatures are already refusing to drop (in fact, the temperature at 8pm at Edinburgh Airport was actually at its maximum value for the day so far at that station).

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8pm this evening was 5.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 5.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Vile again. Not just exactly the same conditions as yesterday but the temperature is exactly the same as it was yesterday evening at 6.9C. Barely any change in between with a ridiculous low of 6.2C followed by a max of 7.4C.

Awful week of horrible disgusting tripe

It's been perishing cold today, with unbroken overcast and a max of 5.2*C, but I guess we've had such a mild autumn so far we're just not used to anything chilly.  Still, better get used to it for when the real cold arrives...
