The rain from earlier on has cleared away towards the north and west for now, but it remains mostly cloudy.

In the end, a total of 1.6 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with about 1.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which means that yesterday will now go down as an official rain day at both of those stations.

Meanwhile, too much cloud means that the temperatures are refusing to drop yet again and in fact, the temperature has actually gone back up slightly during the last hour or so to around 10°C which is not much different from yesterday's maximum temperature.

Despite the fact that we are now into the darkest period of the year with only about six weeks to go until the winter solstice, it remains the case that we still cannot get a completely sunless day at Edinburgh Gogarbank. This has been been shown by the fact that there has been just two sunless days during this autumn so far with each of these occurring during September and October. This means that there hasn't been any completely sunless days during this month so far and even this morning, the Sun has rather defiantly, continued to shine at times.

Having said that though, there is also a lot of cloud around. We had a red sky just before sunrise which means that if you believe in the folklore which goes with that, this does not bode well for the rest of today if that ends up being true on this occasion. The rest of the day will therefore need a close eye kept on it but for now, all we have is the same old borefest as before with very little actually happening.

Lack of available data continues to be a problem. This has been ongoing for quite a while now, and I would really like to see that being sorted out once and for all since this is preventing me from being able to present the data for this area on these threads in the way that I would like to (i.e. with the usual readings for each of my three local stations).

All I can therefore say is that last night's overnight minimum temperature was around 9°C and that the temperature at 8am this morning was around 10°C.

I mentioned this morning that the Sun has shining defiantly here and the result of this is that a total of 1.9 hours of sunshine has now been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon, despite there being a lot of cloud around. That "shepherd's warning" stuff which goes with a red sky in the morning doesn't necessarily have to be right on every single occasion and as far as this part of the world is concerned, it is looking as though that folklore is turning out to be wrong this time since there are still no signs of any bad weather here at the moment. This also means that the increasingly long wait for that elusive first completely sunless day of this month goes on.

Having said that though, the wind has picked up a bit during the course of this morning with maximum wind gusts at Edinburgh Gogarbank of 31.1mph from the SSE as at 12 noon. Meanwhile, the temperature is now around 11°C.

Brightening up after the cloud associated with the weak cold front has passed on.

13.4 c & 82% h but the fresh southerly wind made it feel cool and fresh when I popped into the town. Still wore shorts & cardigan, though, as the heat hits me when I get back indoors all sweaty & breathless (I'm totally unfit).

Looks like being a filthy night for the local nightclub revellers tonight, so I can't imagine them wanting to hang around outside for too long come closing time . . . at least that's one positive I can derive from the upcoming unsettled spell.

The cloud cover has become more extensive as the afternoon has gone on so in the end, a total of 2.4 hours of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank but with nothing at all in that department since 1pm this afternoon.

It is also very windy with the wind at Edinburgh Gogarbank now gusting up to 35.4mph from the SE as at 4pm this afternoon.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm was 10.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 10°C at Edinburgh Airport and 10.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, after reaching a maximum of around 11°C.

Joke temperatures as well with barely any diurnal range all week apart from yesterday.

Day (9am-9pm)maxes/night mins (9pm-9am):

Mon: 10.4/8.8

Tue:10.7/9.7

Wed: 10.7/10.7 – so bad the highest temperature of the day period was the same as the overnight low. Not even a case of that being the 9am temperature it was actually stuck on 10.7C for over 4 hours

Thu: 9.8/3.7 – only vaguely normal day

Fri: 10.0/8.6

Still 9.9C now with that REVOLTING wind rattling away outside

Even horrendously wet and dull Novembers like 1984 and 1997 would be preferable as at least watching the huge rainfall totals accumulate would provide some interest.

For the second evening in a row at this time, I can report that it is raining here in Edinburgh once again and unlike last night, the rain looks set in for the rest of the night this time. That has already resulted in 0.4 mm of rain being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 8pm this evening.

The wind has died down a bit though although the maximum wind gusts a few hours ago had got up to 37.9mph from the SE at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

Once again, lack of available data is hampering my efforts to give a full report report. However, the data which I have shows that the temperatures are not only refusing to drop as a result of there being too much wind and too much cloud around, but the temperatures have actually gone up a bit over the last hour or so. Just about an hour ago, the temperature had gone back up to around 11°C which is actually as high as what it has been all day.
