Who else remembers the frigid few days at the start of November this year.
I don't think the following winter was especially unusual though.

I'd just passed my driving test and remember going down to Whitby through snow flurries, daytime highs about 2C
As often happens in a decent easterly, the SE was colder than further north.

My goodness. I can remember that. Can't believe that is 38 years ago now.

I can't be precise on years, but there were a couple of Halloween to Bonfire night periods round that time which were cold. We backed onto a field and had a bonfire every year with a load of friends; one year - and it probably would have been around 1980 (I'd have been 😎 I remember frost on all the wood one morning.

There was also one year when it was foggy. The smoke from all the bonfires was trapped and we got a proper old-fashioned smog. It was great.

I miss bonfires on 'Bommy Night'.

I don't remember the start of that month, but I certainly remember the final few days.  Quite a significant cold N-NE'ly came in on the 28th bringing some very heavy snow showers with it.  I remember the Friday morning well- started very crisp and frosty, and then at school remember looking out of the window to the NE and seeing an increasingly dark-grey mass of cloud edging in from the north.  Around 10.30am, the first flakes of dry snow started, then by morning break it had turned into some of the heaviest snow I've ever seen to date.  I think we picked up around 2 inches of snow very quickly from that, and then there were further snow showers throughout that day and night.

Didn't last long though.  Even so the Winter of 80/81 was pretty decent here with a wax/waning succession of cold/wintry spells.

I was 15 and recorded in my first annual diary:

Cloudy and vv cold; brrrr! Mostly stayed in listening to OMD and Bad Manners. A few flakes of snow today in the garden with ****

I put a snowflake symbol on one day and a snow and rain symbol on two more.

November's mean max was lower than the following December's here.

Clear memories.
