There are times when I struggle to find these thread interesting in terms of what I am reporting in them due to the fact that from May 2018 onwards (as of 1 November 2018), there hasn't been a single month which has been wetter than average here in Edinburgh. Because of that, it feels as though it is becoming increasingly safe that every month for which I am starting this thread, is always going to either have average rainfall, or be drier than average overall. In many ways, I still feel a bit like that, and I will explain why that is the case later on.
However, one thing is different this time because normally, I wouldn't actually have anything to report in these threads right away. On this occasion though, it is actually raining at the very time when I am starting this thread and so, that has given me something to report right away.
Even as early as 1am this morning, I can report that a total of 1.0 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank, along with 1.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. Since today is only the first day of this month, those are also the totals for this month so far as at 1am this morning. This straight away in the very first hour of the day, also means that today will now go down as the first official rain day of this month at both of those stations.
This means that in contrast to what happened during October, this month is already starting off on quite a wet note here. However, it has to be remembered that we have been here before on quite a few occasions during the last few months. There has been many occasions since May when we have had a wet spell such as what we are seeing just now. However, these wet spells never last for long these days and so it is for that reason, that every month at the moment keeps on producing no more than average rainfall with some months being significantly drier than average. Looking at the latest model output as well, there is no reason just now to believe that this month will be any different in the end, despite the wet start to the month and the more unsettled immediate outlook.
However, everyone will have their experiences depending on their location, and this is the place to report that throughout the course of this month.
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.
