The sky is fairly clear just now as I write, but there was a shower of rain not too long ago which caused the temperature to go back up a bit after a very cold start to the night. As usual though, this shower produced very little in the way of actual recorded rainfall here so in the end, a total of just 0.2 mm of rain was recorded yet again for yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with just 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This now makes yesterday, the 16th day in a row to have produced no more than that absolute minimum amount of rainfall (which is 0.2 mm) and now, we just seem destined to never get anything more than that, ever again just now, especially as this has happened, despite the presence of quite a number of heavy showers nearby throughout tonight.

As 8pm last night, the temperature was below freezing at all three of my local stations. It's still cold just now, but the temperature at midnight was now only below freezing at Edinburgh Airport, and had now gone back up to 0.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -1°C at Edinburgh Airport and +0.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Last night was looking so good for a while from a frost perspective until the presence of too much cloud later on in the night ruined all of that. In addition to that though, there has also been some showers around, especially during this morning although we are still seeing the odd glimpse of the Sun at times.

Those showers during this morning have resulted in a total of 1.0 mm of rain being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 1.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 8am this morning which means that today will now go down as the first official rain day at both of those stations since 13 October 2018. This has also at long long last, finally ended that seemingly never-ending run of 16 days in a row with no more than 0.2 mm of rain on each of those days.

We can argue all we like about whether or not, it is appropriate to refer to that as "much needed rainfall". However, the fact of the manner is that if you watch any YouTube video from a visitor to this area about their experiences of travelling here, they will usually always tell you that one of the things which defines Scotland is the rain and that this is something which we should embrace as a result. Because of that, I do sometimes miss the rain a bit when it's not here, and that is why it is nice to have that back again.

Anyway, last night's minimum temperature was -2.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -3°C at Edinburgh Airport and -1.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. Without giving any more information away, we can see that last night has ended up being not as cold overall, as the previous night. Furthermore, it was quite early during yesterday evening that those minimum temperatures were reached and since then, the temperatures have actually been slowly going up over time.

As a result of that, the temperature at 8am this morning had now gone up to 1.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 1°C at Edinburgh Airport and 2.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This morning and lunchtime period has brought us a mixture of some sunshine at times, but also a lot of cloud at times with the odd shower. This has resulted in a total of 2.2 hours of sunshine being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 1pm this afternoon. Then means that just another 2.4 hours of sunshine are needed between now and the end of tomorrow in order for this month to go down as being sunnier than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank. Since it is still bright with plenty of blue sky around, this is looking fairly likely at the moment, to happen by the end of today.

However, those showers have now increased today's rainfall total so far as at 1pm this afternoon to 1.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 1.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Nevertheless, it is slightly milder than of late and with the wind being fairly light, it actually feels quite pleasant whenever the Sun comes out.

On that note, the temperature at 1pm this afternoon was 8.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 9°C at Edinburgh Airport and 7.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This afternoon has brought some more sunny intervals at times but also more in the way of cloud and another shower of rain. This means that a total of 3.3 hours of sunshine has now been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 4pm this afternoon. That in turn, still leaves us needing exactly another hour of sunshine by the end of tomorrow in order for this month to go down as being sunnier than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

For a while, it had looked as though we would get that today as the early part of this afternoon was rather sunny. However, those hopes were then scuppered later on as it became much cloudier. At the moment, there is more in the way of clear sky around once again, but this doesn't look as though it has been in the right place for us to be able to see the Sun as we approach sunset. Because of that, I won't be surprised if the above reported sunshine total ends up being the final total for today and even if it isn't, there isn't enough available daylight left now in order for us to get that final hour of sunshine today, which is needed to confirm this month as being sunnier than average overall.

However, I can confirm that this will go down as a sunnier than average month at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh regardless of what happens during tomorrow, as the total number of hours of sunshine there during this month is already more than the 1981-2010 average for that station with that outcome having already been sealed as early as Sunday. As far as Edinburgh Gogarbank is concerned though, that confirmation will now have to wait until tomorrow.

With the way that this month has gone though and given tomorrow's forecast, I don't foresee any problems with that so in the end, I think that this month will end up being sunnier than average at both of those stations although for Edinburgh Gogarbank, this has been a very close run thing.

Anyway, this afternoon's shower of rain has now raised today's rainfall totals so far as at 4pm this afternoon to 1.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 1.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Today's maximum temperature was 8.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 9°C at Edinburgh Airport and 8.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 6.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

There is still the odd shower around with variable amounts of cloud.

This has now raised today's rainfall total so far as at 8pm this evening to 1.6 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 1.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

It's not as cold as it was at this time last night when the temperature at all three of my local stations was already below freezing. Nevertheless, the temperatures are still gradually dropping away especially when the sky is that bit clearer.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8pm this evening was 3.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 3°C at Edinburgh Airport and 3.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
