At the moment, I have been struggling to feel motivated to start this thread as the month of August appeared to proved conclusively that the rainfall amounts for any given month at Edinburgh Gogarbank in particular, will never be any more than the 1981-2010 in the manner in which it used to be on certain occasions. Looking at the latest model output, I am struggling to see that changing during this August as well.

Nevertheless, I have started this thread so that whatever is recorded in terms of rainfall during this month of October is reported here. It may well be as well, that other members have far more interesting data to report for their rainfall totals during this month than what I have, and this is the very place where you can now report that rainfall data for this month.

12mm mostly the past 24 hours, a largely dry week coming up, I suspect another dry month unless there's a dramatic change.

Furthermore, there are still no signs on the various forecast models of very much (if anything at all) in the way of rainfall coming up here for the foreseeable future. At this rate, this place is going to end up turning into some sort of desert in  the longer term if this keeps going on.

In the end, a total of 1.6 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday along with 0.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

However, today has been completely dry so far as at 7am this morning.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 2.6 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 60.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 481.0 mm as at 7am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 2.2 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 51.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 476.0 mm as at 7am this morning.

A very dry start to this month here, even in comparison with what it is like elsewhere in the UK and if this keeps up, it would not surprise me if we were on course for our driest October on record here, especially since this is the one month within the entire year where the 1981-2010 averages for rainfall in this part of the world are at their highest levels.

Just like yesterday, there is expected to some further rain nearby over the next few days but with very little of that once again, reaching this part of the world. Since we are then expected to go into a generally drier spell after that until the end of the week, the outlook for here still looks like a very dry one at a time when we could really do with getting some much needed rainfall here.

In the end, a total of 2.4 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday along with 0.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, a total of 0.6 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning, along with 0.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 5.6 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 63.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 484.0 mm as at 8am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 3.2 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 52.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 477.0 mm as at 8am this morning.

What is remarkable as well, is the manner which we keep on getting just very small rainfall totals even though there has been a massive wall of rain on the radar maps just to the west of here and very close by for the last few days. That is causing a lot of problems in the west of Scotland whereas there are parts of the east of Scotland which have been in near drought conditions for quite a while now, which could therefore really do with getting some much needed rainfall now, and which still aren't getting that rainfall which is badly. On that note, I don't recall ever seeing such a vast contrast in fortunes over such a short distance when it comes to rainfall.

October started quite wet here: 1st/2nd = 3.6mm, 3/4th = 1mm and 5/6th = 17.2mm. Total so far is 21.6mm. Enjoying the brief dry spell here - got a muddy lawn cut today! Looking quite wet for this neck of the woods especially on Friday and Saturday - partly dependent upon just how much the block to the east gives way ...

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 6.0 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 64.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 484.4 mm as at 8am this morning.

Finally, the forecasts are starting to show signs of some much needed rainfall coming up with the Met Office issuing a yellow warning for rain in this area on Saturday. I am still a little bit tentative about that and the reason is that is not because of any doubts about this rainfall actually occurring, but because of the fact that every unsettled period which have had since April has only been brief.

That is the reason why we still haven't had a wetter than average month here since then and so, it is all too easy on that basis to assume that any upcoming unsettled spell will also be brief with this month being drier than average yet again in the end. However, we do at least have a glimmer of hope in the forecast models that we might finally at long last, be about to start making up the rainfall deficit which built up during the first half of the summer in particular, and that is at least something to hold onto.

In the end, a total of 1.4 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday along with 0.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, a total of 0.2 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning, along with 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 7.6 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 65.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 486.0 mm as at 8am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 4.2 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 53.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 478.0 mm as at 8am this morning.

The very dry start to this month goes on as it is shown yet again, that we just cannot get any significant rainfall totals in this part of the world any more, these days.
