For those who may not know - the south have had it very warm, muggy and mild over the past few weeks - not to mention drier and of course we had a scorcher of a summer which started last week of April.

Today (Saturday 22/9/18) Exeter maximum temperature was 12.5c so far - been raining on and off and sometimes heavy. I have turned the central heating on - Most days in September I always remember the temperature exceeding 15c and today's daytime max (so far) has been 12.5c and felt cold in the wind and rain - More typical of October or November type weather than September. - Bare in mind it was only a few days ago when we didn;t get below 18c by night time and were easily reaching 21c or 22c by daytime.

What are your thoughts and what's it like where you are in the UK?

Down here for Devon - I can't remember a September daytime max where by the temperature has failed to reach the teens!?

don't know as we started around 14C this morning but for most of day it's hovered around 12C.

12C is bloody cold for this time of year, very unusual, and would be more suited for an overnight low not a mid afternoon high!

Mid September 1986- with a low to our south, a warm front not making progress over us, and lots of rain, I think we maxed at 10C.

I'll check the date- you might beat me to it.

Edit: must have been 15th. CET of 11C plus and for once, I suspect that was higher for Lancashire!!!

The really cold wet stuff was just N of the front.

I have a reference to 13/9/1975 where the synoptics show a depression in the North Sea and a strong unstable northerly across the UK

London had 1.41" rain and Margate was wettest with 3.57"

Max in London reported at 10C and the coldest were Gatwick Airport and Ventnor IOW with a max of 9C

Warmer air moving in behind the rain so I would expect the temperature to be rising in Exeter now, probably up to 15c by dark.

There is probably going to be an air frost in a few sheltered spots up here tonight. Today was cool but nothing noteworthy here.

Hourly readings today at Sennybridge have not exceeded 8.9C and at Lake Vrynwy 8.6C.

I checked the figure for Shawbury (similar rural and generally cold station to those above but across the border in England) on 27 Sept 1974 and the maximum that day was 9C so similar to today.

We have had daytime maxes in July cooler than daytime maxes in December. Surely that's not too exceptional? We have been up to 16C in December and getting a max below 16C in July isn't exceedingly difficult.

Shawbury's an odd-ball; not sure it's a 'cold station' as such, despite the really low temperatures recorded under the right conditions in winter. The Dec 81 event was quite exceptional, created by the particular antecedent conditions and the geography of the local area.

We have had daytime maxes in July cooler than daytime maxes in December. Surely that's not too exceptional? We have been up to 16C in December and getting a max below 16C in July isn't exceedingly difficult.

What is really interesting about that month is that Aberdeen had its highest temperature of that entire month at a remarkably low 14.4°C.

Famously, the maximum in London on the day of the Queen's coronation in early June 1953 was supposed to have been lower than that of the immediately preceding Christmas Day.

There was a maximum of 9C recorded at Kew on 29 September 1918, but of course that was right at the end of the month. That seems to have been the lowest September maximum ever recorded in the London area, at least up to 1968. (Source: "London Weather" by JH Brazell, published by the Met Office. It's available in PDF form somewhere on their website, as I remember downloading it from there.)

Sunday was colder than Saturday here. At midday the car thermometer was reading 7C! The sun came out in the afternoon and it crept up to 12C.
