In the end, a total of 4.2mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during Friday along with 5.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Hover, it has remained completely dry since then with not too much more in the way of rainfall being expected to occur between now and the end of the month.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 55.8 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 55.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 476.2 mm as at midnight.

This means than only another 2.3 mm of rain now needs to fall between now and the end of this month for this month to go down as being wetter than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank in terms of the actual rainfall amount.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 48.2 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 48.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 472.6 mm as at midnight.

This means than another 15.6 mm of rain now needs to fall between now and the end of this month for this month to go down as being wetter than average at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in terms of the actual rainfall amount.

With not too much more in the way of rainfall being expected to occur between now and the end of the month, this is shaping up to yet another month that demonstrates that we just cannot get an overall wetter than average month in this part of the world these days, at least in terms of the actual rainfall amounts (it is of course, a different story when that is seen in terms of the number of official rain days).

In the end, a total of 2.0mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday along with 0.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 57.8 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 57.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 478.2 mm as at midnight.

This means than only another 0.3 mm of rain now needs to fall between now and the end of this month for this month to go down as being wetter than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank in terms of the actual rainfall amount.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 48.8 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 48.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 473.2 mm as at midnight.

Given the latest model output, I think that we can safely say that this month will now go down as being drier than average at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in terms of the actual rainfall amount as very little in the way of rainfall is being forecast for the rest of the month IMBY and it would take an absolute deluge to bring this month's total there up to the 1981-2018 average for that station.

A boring drizzle infested nightmare of a month here. There has been just 25.6mm but only six completely dry days.

An incredible six days with trace amounts and a further five days with either 0.2mm or 0.4mm. Utterly pointless

Max daily total just 5.2mm and since March only those awful days at the end of July have produced as much as 10mm.

During the course of this month, it has been wetter than average in terms of the number of official rain days at both Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In terms of the actual rainfall amounts though, I have known for quite a while that this month would be drier than average at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh since the total for there is well short of the 1981-2010 average for that station.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank though, we have now been waiting for quite a while to get that final 0.3 mm which is still needed to take us over the 1981-2010 average there, for that station. At the very least, I would have expected that to have happened by now. Yet, the outlook for both today and tomorrow is now so dry that even this is now asking for too much.

To me, some real proper rainfall is what is needed to get us out of this complete borefest which we have had to endure for quite a while in these parts and until I start seeing some above average monthly totals (something which has not now happened since April), that is never going to happen. The reason why this is the the case is because unless I can see it as being wetter than average in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, I cannot view this month as being unsettled in any way. Furthermore, the fact that this is the case despite it being wetter than average in terms of the number of official rain days means that we are clearly not getting enough rain on those rainy days in terms of what the particular weather pattern which we are experiencing, would deserve to be seeing (to me, it's not about actually wanting it to rain and is instead, about wanting the actual pattern to be fair in terms of what the number of official rain days is suggesting).

So for both of these stations, this month now looks set to go down being wetter than average in terms of the number of official rain days, but drier than average yet again in terms of the actual rainfall amounts and the bottom line here, is that absolutely nothing is happening here to suggest that we have even started to make up the rainfall deficit which has built up from those late spring and summer droughts, and this also confirms that this has to be the most boring period of weather which I have ever endured as a result.

For the record, the current monthly totals are 57.8 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 48.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
