Overall, August was a poor month which showed itself to be a very pale shadow of the other two months. The month started off on a warm note but in the end, it was a slightly cooler than average month here. In terms of the actual rainfall amounts, it was a slightly drier than average. However, it was a slightly wetter than average month in terms of the number of official rain days, and it was also a substantially duller than average month.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Given below, are the final August statistics for the botanic gardens in Edinburgh from all of the data which I have available which are:

Temperature (°C):

Mean Min.: 11.4
Min. Anomaly: 0.0

Lowest Max.: 13.1 (on 26/8)

Sunniest Day: 13.3 (on 9/8)
Sunless Days: 4

In contrast to the conditions at Edinburgh Gogarbank, the botanic gardens in Edinburgh were slightly sunnier but wetter during August. Unlike Edinburgh Gogarbank which was drier than average, the botanic gardens in Edinburgh were actually wetter than average although the number of hours of sunshine was much closer to the 1981-2010 average, than was the case for Edinburgh Gogarbank.

That is important because what is happening at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in terms of weather statistics is much more representative of what is happening in Edinburgh city centre (which is where the majority of visitors to the city congregate, especially during the festival periods), than the other more outlying stations such as Swanston, Edinburgh Gogarbank and Edinburgh Airport.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Minimum 1004.1- 7th

 Days with hail falling 0

 Days with thunder heard 3

A heat and dryness of summer 2018 relaxed after the 8th of the month and thereafter the month dominated by westerly winds bringing a mix of sunny spells and showers and some wetter days from low pressures edging up from France. Sunshine totals were close to average, rainfall was above average and temperatures ended up slightly above average.

Of note:

An intense but highly localised heavy shower on the 10th gave the Harbour area of town 10 mm of rain in 10 minutes at 3 pm. 1 mile away in north Folkestone it remained dry.
