Getting a bright and sunny start to any day in this part of the world has been a very rare event during this summer, and getting two such bright and sunny starts to a day back to back with each other is even more of a rarity in these parts these days. Yet, that is exactly what we have just now with a total of 1.0 hours of sunshine having already been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning.

From that perspective, what is now the final weekend of the meteorological summer couldn't have got off to a better start than that. However, a total of 0.2 mm of rain has been recorded for this morning so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 8am, although that is probably down to condensation rather than any actual rainfall.

It is also rather chilly out there. Last night's overnight minimum temperature was 7.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This makes last night, the coldest night of this month so far at all three of my local stations, and the joint coldest night of this summer so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh and Edinburgh Airport.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was 9.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 9°C at Edinburgh Airport and 9.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Not too bad a day here in Edinburgh.

A lot of cloud around, but some sunny intervals as well with a total of 5.9 hours of sunshine having been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 5pm this afternoon.

The one rather disappointing aspect about today comes from the fact that there is still so much cloud around on what was supposed to be the best day not just of this weekend, but also of this whole week. Under those circumstances, I would have expected today to be the sunniest day of the week but that is now, looking unlikely to be the case. Having said that though, the amount of sunshine which we have had today is still far more than than what we have getting recently, so I can't really complain too much about that.

Whilst today hasn't been quite as sunny as yesterday though, it has been a bit warmer and so, today's maximum temperature was 16.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 16°C at Edinburgh Airport and 17.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. For both Edinburgh Gogarbank and Edinburgh Airport though, that is still rather disappointing for this time of the year.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 5pm this afternoon was 16.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 16°C at Edinburgh Airport and 17.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Well, would you believe it?

I mentioned in my last post that today wasn't quite as sunny as yesterday and this was true at that particular point in time. After that though, the clouds melted away quite a lot which then led to a much sunnier start to this evening before the clouds thickened up a bit towards sunset.

The end result of this is that a total of 8.6 hours of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank in the end. The funny thing is though, that is exactly the same as yesterday's final sunshine total at that same station and so along with yesterday, today was our joint second sunniest day of this month so far.

With more in the way of sunshine, this initially boosted the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank to 16.8°C which has now, ended up being today's maximum temperature there instead of what I reported in my last post.

However, the temperatures are now really dropping away like a stone and at 9pm this evening, the temperature was now down to 11.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 12°C at Edinburgh Airport and just 10.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
