Overcast as usual, and the wind has also picked up a bit ahead of that cold front which is being forecast to introduce much cooler air to the whole of the UK by the end of the week.

For now, we remain in the warm air ahead of that cold front, so it is still rather warm and humid here. Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was still holding up at 18.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 18°C at Edinburgh Airport and 18.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which is not very good for trying to get some much needed sleep.

A dull, dreary, wet and overcast start to today with quite a bit of heavy rain around, and with nothing in the way of sunshine having been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning.

So far, this has resulted in 4.6 mm of rain being recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning, along with 3.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This means that today will now go down as yet another official rain day at both of those stations.

After a very warm and sticky night which caused quite a few issues with my sleep, the temperature is now in the process of dropping away as that cold front finally moves through and so, the temperatures are currently at their lowest values for today so far.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was 15.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 16°C at Edinburgh Airport and 16.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The rain from earlier on this morning has cleared away, and there is even some blue sky which has started to appear. That in turn, has revealed something which we have seen very little of in this parts during this month so far and by that, I am referring to that very strange, bright and round object which is known as the Sun.

So far though, there is still nothing in the way of sunshine which has been recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon, although today is unlikely now to end up going down as being completely sunless day in the end.

As at 12 noon, a total of 5.8 mm of rain has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank, along with 5.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The air now has a much fresher feel as a result of this morning's drop in the temperatures and that should be much better for getting to sleep tonight. This morning's minimum temperature was 15.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 15°C at Edinburgh Airport and 15.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 12 noon was 16.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 17°C at Edinburgh Airport and 17.0°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This is turning into a much better evening than what we have seen for quite a while in these parts. There is still a bit of cloud around, but there is far more in the way of blue sky around than what there has been at any time, for quite a long time.

So far as at 5pm this afternoon, a total of 2.3 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank. That still isn't very much, but it is more than we have had for quite a while and it also has to be remembered that there was nothing at all in the way of recorded sunshine at Edinburgh Gogarbank at 12 noon.

Today's maximum temperature was 19.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 19°C at Edinburgh Airport and 19.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This means that today was slightly cooler than yesterday, but still reasonably warm despite that cold front having passed through. At the botanic gardens in Edinburgh though, that maximum temperature was actually reached at 2am this morning with this afternoon's temperature only peaking at 18.8°C.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 5pm this afternoon was 18.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 18°C at Edinburgh Airport and 18.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

there has been some thin high level cloud around during this evening but apart from that, it's been a nice and sunny evening (it's been a long time since I've been able to say that) with a total of 5.2 hours of sunshine being recorded in the end at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

However, it is at times like this, that I'm really noticing the nights drawing in and on that basis, I would like to take this opportunity to make an official announcement on this thread.

As you will now, I have been reporting on this thread quite late in the evenings during the summer months, and the reason for that has been the longer hours of daylight which has resulted in this time being the earliest point of the day where I could safely report that day's final sunshine totals.

However, the nights are drawing in quite quickly now, and this has now happened to such an extent that it has now become a real struggle to get any recorded sunshine after 8pm. As I write, this evening's official time of sunset here in Edinburgh was at 8:32pm and just before sunset itself, the Sun will already be too low in the sky for any sunshine to be properly recorded.

As a result of this, I have decided that I will carry on posting at this time until the end of this month just in case of the unlikely event that we do get a bit of recorded sunshine after 8pm, although I can't really see that happening again now for this year.

As from 1 September 2018, I will then be posting just after 8pm evening from now on instead of from 9pm. At that point in time, I should now be able to safely give each day's final sunshine total on that 8pm report. In addition to that, I may try to bring back my tea-time report to 4pm instead of 5pm so that I am working with fixed 4 hour gaps in between each report, although that might still be delayed until 5pm on certain days due to time constraints.

My main aim after that if for me to be posting on each thread at just after midnight (that will of course, be the initial post in each thread if no-one else has started that day's thread beforehand), just after 8am, just after 12 noon, just after 4pm, and just after 8pm on each day.

That in turn, will then make up my schedule right throughout the autumn, winter and next spring until it gets light enough at nights once again during next year, for that final post in each day's thread to be made that bit later once again. I apologise for being off topic here, but I just want let everyone know how I was going to proceed from here as regards to these threads so that everyone knew what was going to be coming up.

Anyway and back on topic, this evening is a lot cooler and fresher than last night, and the temperature at 9pm this evening was 12.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 12°C at Edinburgh Airport and 13.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

What we are experiencing here just now though, isn't even the really cool air (it was actually still pleasantly warm here during today, though not as warm and humid as recently) because that is only expected to come in behind a second cold front which is expected to cross through here during tomorrow morning.

Indeed, the forecasts are even predicting cold northerly winds from the Arctic by the end of the week with the possibility of a very early season ground frost in parts of Scotland. If that happens, that will no doubt be such a shock to the system that by then, I wouldn't be surprised if you were then regretting the fact that you actually wanted it to cool down in the first place.
