A dull and damp morning, and a rather dreary and depressing start to what is being forecast to be rather a miserable weekend ahead with ex-tropical storm Ernesto still to come tomorrow. Not surprisingly, this has resulted in nothing in the way of sunshine being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning.

Today's rainfall totals from that so far are so small that I have decided that they are not even worth posting on the Precipitation Watch thread just yet, as they amount to just 0.2 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 0.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. Nevertheless, the fact that there is this rain around at times, is adding to the very miserable feel of this morning, although the wind has died down a bit since yesterday.

Last night was mild, but the temperatures have not yet bottomed out from that and are currently at their lowest values of today so far. All I can therefore say is that the temperature at 8am this morning was 15.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 14°C at Edinburgh Airport and 14.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Not much has changed since this morning. It's dry just now, but this just means that we have gone back into yet another boring grey nothingness, with yet more constant grey skies and nothing actually happening.

The result of this is that there is still nothing in the way of sunshine which has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon. As I write, there has been nothing in the way of recorded sunshine at Edinburgh Gogarbank since yesterday at 12 noon, and this now means that we have now gone a full 24 hours and counting without any recorded sunshine at Edinburgh Gogarbank, and without any signs of that changing any time soon.

Although it's dry just now though, there has been some further rain during this morning, so today's rainfall total so far at at 12 noon is 0.8 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 1.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh where today will now go down as yet another official rain day as a result.

In top of that, the temperatures are once again refusing to rise just now. This morning's minimum temperature eventually bottomed out at 13.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 14°C at Edinburgh Airport and 14.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 12 noon was a rather dismal 14.5°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 15°C at Edinburgh Airport and 15.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

August in general has been a big let-down here compared to what the rest of this summer has been like. However, one common theme about this summer is the fact that I have lost count of the number of days where the actual weather on that particular day, has ended up being not as bad as what it had been forecast to to be.

That theme has even carried on into this month as well, and has actually been particularly true this month with today being a casing point yet again. If you went by the official forecasts for this weekend, you would have expected this weekend to have been a virtual complete washout with both days being completely sunless days at Edinburgh Gogarbank, and you would probably come to the same conclusion if you went by Richard's grim outlook above when he talked about the UK being a cloud magnet.

Yet rather unexpectedly, we actually saw a little bit of sunshine just after lunchtime which has now resulted in a total of 12 minutes of sunshine being recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 3pm this afternoon.

Don't get me wrong on this. This has still been a poor August day overall, and that bit of sunshine which we did get was only very brief before we went back to constant grey skies once again. However, that is a bit of sunshine which we shouldn't even have been getting according to the forecasts, and that recorded sunshine is also 12 minutes more than what we should have been getting today according to those same forecasts.

This means that whilst today has still been poor overall, it has turned out to yet another better day than expected and so, this constant theme of days being better than expected during this summer, goes on for yet another day.

Meanwhile, the temperatures are still not that great, but they have recovered a bit with that brighter weather and once again, are not as bad as what was being forecast. Consequently, the temperature at 3pm this afternoon was 16.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 16°C at Edinburgh Airport and 18.0°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This is most definitely the worst run of summer weekends since 2012. Simply dreadful

Here, today hasn't been as bad as what it was expected to be in this part of the world and since we haven't had any further rain here since earlier on this morning, this has certainly not been the washout which many forecasts were predicting either.

To me, this is a good example of a weekend day which is not turning out to be as bad as what it was expected to be (although your total of 1.32 hours of sunshine is still a lot better than the measly 12 minutes of sunshine which has been recorded for the whole of today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 4pm this afternoon) which from what I am reading, is clearly different from what is happening up in Aberdeen.

Having said that though, the temperature has dropped a bit once again over the last wee while as a result of those grey skies becoming more dominant once again. With that in mind, I can already confirm that today's maximum temperature was 16.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 16°C at Edinburgh Airport and 18.0°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 15.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 16°C at Edinburgh Airport and 16.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Looks as though the temperature here, still hasn't yet peaked for today after all because in the last hour, it has now jumped up to 17°C at Edinburgh Airport and 18.2°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 5pm this afternoon which for both of those stations, is now the highest temperature of today so far.

At Edinburgh Gogarbank, the temperature has gone up slightly to 16.2°C as at 5pm this afternoon, although that is slightly below the highest temperature of the day so far at that station.

It is still dry here as well with all of the rain remaining to the south of here as a very narrow and light band of it, although as at 5pm this afternoon, we still have that same total of just 12 minutes of sunshine become recorded for the whole of today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as our rather depressing and boring grey nothingness, goes on with nothing else actually happening.

This evening has continued on the same old dull and overcast note as before and just like yesterday, yet another really abysmal total of just 12 minutes of sunshine was recorded for the entire day at Edinburgh Gogarbank in the end. That amounts to just 24 minutes of sunshine over the last two days which is absolutely shocking for this time of year.

Today's temperature eventually peaked at a maximum of 16.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 17°C at Edinburgh Airport and 18.2°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which is roughly on a par with yesterday's maximums.

Just like last night as well, this is turning into another mild night and at the moment, there is very little in the way of any sort of diurnal temperature variation to speak of. Consequently, the temperature at 9pm this evening was 15.5°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 16°C at Edinburgh Airport and 15.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
