Coming up to 10 years since this absolute awful summer month. The worst feature of this month was the lack of sunshine, for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, as a whole, it was duller than February of the same year.  February 2018 was exceptionally sunny granted but August was so dull it was the 9th sunniest month of the year!

February, March, April, September and October were all sunnier than August 2008.

For northern Scotland, it wasn't as bad as the rest of the country, sunshine wise.

Some of the sunshine figures are shocking for a summer month

Hampstead: 97hrs

Wittering: 116hrs

Ross-on-Wye: 126hrs

St Mawgan: 118hrs

Edgbaston: 101hrs

Valley: 86hrs

Woodford: 79hrs

Boulmer: 72hrs

Eskdalemuir: 41hrs

Aldergrove: 61hrs

For parts of Scotland Northern Ireland, to add to the extreme dullness, it was also exceptionally wet.

The cloud amounts meant that maxima were suppressed but minima held up. The highest maximum recorded in the UK for the month was  27.5C on the 6th at Faversham

For me, it was a month to forget!

I remember this very well - I think it was the worst summer month I can recall.

The ststs bore it out as the worst August since 1912. It was the dullest August since August 1912.

I got married on August 1 that year and considering how dreadful the month was we were very lucky. It was a warm and humid day with good spells of sunshine and only a brief five minute shower in the daytime (I think there was a bit more rain later in the evening but my memory is a little hazy for some reason). Looking back at the photos you’d think it was a glorious summer day.

Then I spent much of the rest of the month in warmer climes 🙂

It was a shocker Kevin that's for sure. In Northern Ireland it was and remains the wettest August on record with 201.4mm. Flooding on the 16th after the second of two Lows (which would have done late Autumn/winter proud) was described as the worst in a generation.

The only thing I remember from August 2008 was going to Majorca for two weeks. I don't remember anything else about this month, so it really must have been a tedious one. I don't even think there were any thunderstorms either.

It was a shocker. We were camping in Cornwall. A real miserable experience. We came home early.

We had two week in France with our caravan, it wasn’t the best weather we’ve had there but better than reports we were getting from home.

Awful month but nowhere near as poor as June 2007, June 2012 and July 2012. It was much warmer and the cloud types were less depressing. Week of 23rd-29th August 2008 was okay.

Also the weekend weather was not as bad which really affects the perception of a month.

Saturday 16th August 2008 in Lossiemouth:

Saturday 23rd August 2008 at Balmedie Beach, north of Aberdeen:

Would rate August 2011 as a worse August. Can only recall one good day (Saturday 20th) and the final weekend was like something from an arctic wilderness with gale force winds and noon temperatures barely scraping 10C.
