Met Office were spot on for me today - it's been 34.1C, +-0.2C for the last two hours here. Some high cloud has appeared to the west in the last few minutes so that is probably it for the day. Not a room in the house less than 29C :(

Room temps should drop at the weekend so we can all sleep well as I couldn't sleep much last night too, is around 30-32C inside now.  Steady 35.2C to 35.3C for a long while now so won't see a drop much this evening.

Temp at 4pm 34.3C did reach 34.7C earlier in cloudless skies. Wind has picked up again so I don't think we'll go any higher.

My bedside thermometer is currently reading 31c which is a new record high for this summer. Outdoor one recording 34c at 4pm.

Yep. Has gone off the boil slightly here, too, as the breeze has picked up. It's down to 33.9C

When will we know if the July record has been beaten?

I think Im at an all time max, going back to 2005.  33.3c currently

edit - it had peaked 20 minutes ago at 33.6c , remarkable stuff. Now at 33.1

I'm loving it.

I'd have thought any heat from jet exhausts would rise into the atmosphere anyway and away from ground temperature sensors.

I can see how heat released from tarmac heating from the sun could have a minor effect (UHI) but not planes.

July record is 36.7. Don't think it will be beaten today!

Tomasz Schafernaker just said on BBC the top temperature so far today is 35C but he didn't say where. That may be a rounded figure though. So definitely a date record today but so far not a July record.

But they have to take of and land so in doing so they are also creating huge amounts of heat at ground level to.

33.6c here is a station record. 

Ive been recording since October 2005.  Surpasses 33.4c on 19 July 2006.

That's as maybe but Ive been riding the kayak down the beach at Deal (making a splash!) and generally having a ball with my boys, and now Im back at home and the pool is 27c.  Hard life.

Unfortunately I am working (at home). Indoors it is 29.5C and outside the temp has crept back up to 34.2C. We're not out of the oven for another three hours by my reckoning.

The Met Office tweeted 35C at Heathrow, but didn't give it to decimal places.

Its not at ground level, jet aircraft engines are (?) 10-20ft up on the air, and hot air rises....The hotter it is the faster it rises. The notion that aircraft exhausts warm temperatures at LHR is a

Besides, no aircraft go near the LHR weather station thermometers (set at (?)4ft remember) - so the hot air would have to creep along the ground to warm it 

Still at 34.3C wind has eased but I don't think time is on our side.

I work at Heathrow on the airfield. I'd love it to be true that the jet engines warm the airport especially in winter but it's just not the case. Even with aircraft taking off from the southern runway a few hundred feet from you it's chuffing freezing in a raw easterly.  In much the same way Slough is often a thunderstorm desert despite being right in the middle of the most storm prone area of England Heathrow’s temperatures are probably down to the geography and location of the area.
