Low cloud lurking to the east, which obscured the sunrise, however it's blue here - for now - and was 6.2C at 5am

Once again, normal service has been resumed here in Edinburgh as the east coast haar has closed right in, and is quite dense here at the moment. This has resulted in the skies over Edinburgh returning to their more familiar colour of grey with nothing in the way of sunshine having been recorded for today so far as at 8am this morning.

I was surprised to see a bright and sunny morning yesterday which I wasn't expecting to see, and that ended up being our hottest day of the year so far, and the second sunniest day of the year so far. However, it is clearly asking too much in this part of the world for us to get two or more bright and sunny mornings in a row these days, and that has been shown this morning yet again.

This of course, already means that we won't be seeing the second sunniest day of the year today, and today is unlikely to be the hottest day of the year either.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was 11.8ºC at Swanston, 12.0ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 11ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 12.3ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was 12.8ºC at Swanston (so it looks as though this easterly muck has penetrated quite far inland this time), 13.2ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 12ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 12.4ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

I just like to be more specific about what it's like in different parts of the city because although Edinburgh is quite small in terms of its size and population (outside of its big festivals, that is when the population then tends to at least double), it is the capital city of Scotland and big enough for there to be quite a lot of variation across the city at times.

Today has been a complete let-down so far compared to recent days here in Edinburgh.

We don't have the thick fog from earlier on, but we continue to remain in yet another depressing and soul destroying grey and overcast nothingness with nothing in the way of sunshine having been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

In addition to that, the temperatures are refusing to rise as well, and are not really any different just now from what they were like during the night.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 12 noon was 14.2ºC at Swanston in the south of Edinburgh, 14.5ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 14ºC at Edinburgh Airport and just a rather dismal 13.7ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. For all of these stations, those temperatures are very poor and disappointing for this time of year.
