The temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank has now jumped up to 28.0ºC as at 1pm.

I haven't been expecting 30ºC here in Edinburgh today but with the manner in which the temperature is continuing to shoot up just now, that could well be on the cards as we are already not all that far short of the 30ºC at the moment.

As it is, this is only first time this year that the temperature has gone above 80ºF in this part of world and that is something which didn't even happen at all at any point during last summer.

In the last hour or so though, that sea breeze has picked up again causing the temperature to drop back a bit to 27.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, but it did really look for a while as though that 30+°C maximum temperature for here in Edinburgh was on course to happen.

Once the easterly sea breeze kicks in as it is now....game over. 28 C will be the highest today. Still not to be sniffed at! Now...how are Glasgow and Aviemore doing?

Just reached 24 C & 65% H while still in full sunshine despite the nagging nor'easter. Going by the latest satellite image and temperature data, poor North Kent isn't having much luck with low cloud still hanging on over there.

This suggests whilst we no longer have any realistic chance of going above 30ºC in this part of the world, it is now possible that the earlier temperature of 28.0ºC might not end up being today's maximum after all (technically, that is only the highest temperature so far and there is nothing to say that it won't go higher than that).

Anyway, now for my main teatime report as this real classic summer's day nears its end with 11.2 hours of sunshine having been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 5pm this afternoon. Today is not going to be the sunniest day of the year and I think that last Sunday's total of 16.4 hours of sunshine will be the one which holds that record at the end of this year, but we have had about as much sunshine as what we can get at this time of year and because of that, there is still the chance that today could take second place in that department.

Just as the temperature went back up again during the last hour, the sea breeze picked up for a second time and caused the temperature to drop back a bit once again. Because of that, I can probably safely say that today's maximum temperature was 28.2ºC at Swanston, 28.0ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 26ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 24.7ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This makes today the hottest day of the year so far at Swanston, Edinburgh Gogarbank and Edinburgh Airport. Even at the much cooler botanic gardens in Edinburgh, today's maximum temperature was still enough to make today the second warmest day of the year so far at that station.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 5pm this afternoon was 27.3ºC at Swanston, 26.2ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 22ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 20.4ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

27c the max today. The formula of adding 2c to the MetO prediction is holding true for another day. Tomorrow's prediction is 23c, so we'll see where we end up. BBC graphics were going for about 20c it would seem for tomorrow with the crud slow to clear, whereas MetO going for clear all the way in the morning.

At 4.30pm 25.9 was the temp and the max; this suddenly increased at just before 6pm from 26.1 to 26.6 and I have no idea why, when the charts show sub 10C uppers popping up at precisely this time. Currently 26.0 and feeling more oppressive after recent evenings- damper. I can also feel the radiative heat, in the shade, just everywhere. Feels much hotter than the apparatus says.

We had a strange comma shaped blob of cumulus and high cloud travel over us NE to SW this afternoon so the day has been fairly cloudy, but only in the SE. Showed up well on the satellite and I wonder what caused it.

Now cleared but it remains relatively cool. 23C at London city.

Steady wind from ENE but still touched 24C.

It does feel cooler this evening though and wouldn't be surprised if sea fog made it further inland tonight.

At the end of a very eventful day in terms of the temperatures, a total of 15.6 hours of sunshine was recorded in the end at Edinburgh Gogarbank which makes today, the second sunniest day of the year so far at that station as well as the hottest day of the year there so far.

Now, the temperatures are falling away under clear skies so that the temperature at 10pm tonight was 18.1ºC at Swanston, 16.2ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 15ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 15.4ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
