Happy Summer Solstice to all forum members and everyone who is reading this in the Northern Hemisphere where I (and the vast majority of TWO forum members) live.

I know that it is a different story on the other side of the Equator and so for all of you in the Southern Hemisphere (I know for example, that there is at least one TWO forum member in Australia), I would just like to wish you a Happy Winter Solstice.

Those of you in the Southern Hemisphere will at least be glad to know that everything from now on, is heading in the right direction towards the start of your summer as it slowly and gradually starts to get lighter at nights from now on.

Here in the Northern Hemisphere, the very slow and gradual descent towards winter in terms of the length of daylight starts from now on as it very slowly and gradually starts to get darker at nights after today. Hopefully though, it will be a while yet before there is any descent towards winter in terms of our weather.

Anyway, we did has a few passing showers a short while ago which resulted in a further 0.2 mm of rain being recorded at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh but nothing at all at Edinburgh Gogarbank. This then means that a total of 26.4 mm of rain fell in the end at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday along with 28.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Those showers have now cleared away to leave us with a clear but rather chilly night and since this is the shortest night here in the Northern Hemisphere, that should hopefully give us the best view of the entire year, of the twilight which lasts all the way through the night at this time of year due to the nights being so short here.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was 9.2ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 9ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 8.7ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Finally at long last, we have a lovely, sunny morning with 2.4 hours of sunshine having been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning. That is something which we had not seen here for a very long time until now, to the point where it had looked as though such an event was now being consigned to the history books as something which used to happen every now and then, but as something which just never happens any more (at least in this part of the world). Yet, that is something which should be able to happen without any problems at this time of the year and today has finally shown us that.

Having said though, a total of 0.2 mm of rain has also been recorded for today so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 8am this morning, thanks to those showers at around midnight which I mentioned in the opening post of this thread. Edinburgh Gogarbank on the other hand though, is completely dry so far as at 8am this morning.

Last night was an unseasonably cool night for the time of year and the minimum temperature was 6.5ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 5ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 6.3ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. That makes last night the coolest night of the summer so far at all three of my local stations.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was 11.0ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 11ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 11.5ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so the temperatures have already started to respond quite nicely to that sunshine although it's not actually all that warm at the moment.

Ironically here at Folkestone, it is feeling more "balmy" at 16.3 C in the air at 10 am today under a northerly airflow than it did this time yesterday morning. Joys of offshore winds rather than onshore here on the South Kent coast.

However, with humidity levels in the low 50% and with no significant rain being forecast in the next 10-15 days, that will provide the death throes to my beloved already parched looking lawn. Probably won't see green again until the Autumn - unless of course if we go onto having a wet July.

This first day of the astronomical summer (which means that it's now summer by whichever means you define that) is continuing on a fairly sunny note with a total of 5.9 hours of sunshine having now been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon. That in turn, makes this the sunniest start to any day which we've had for quite a long time and even if the annual June permacast was to suddenly resume right now and deprive us of any further sunshine, today would still already be our sunniest day for over a week.

The only cloud which is present just now is in the shape of some fair weather cumulus. The only downside as far as today is concerned is there is still a cool wind which means that even with the sunshine, the temperatures are still refusing to rise to anything which would be considered as being all that warm for the time of year. With that in mind, the temperature at midday was 14.6ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 15ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 15.5ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

There was a bit more cloud for a while during this afternoon, but the day has carried on in a largely sunny note with 9.5 hours of sunshine having been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 5pm this afternoon.

It is still a bit breezy though and although it has warmed up a bit during this afternoon, there isn't anything all that exciting about the temperatures just now although it is forecast to warm up a bit in the coming days. Meanwhile, the temperature at 5pm this afternoon was 18.0ºCat Edinburgh Gogarbank, 17ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 17.6ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The horrendous weather continues. Sunny but impossible to sit outside because of the vile wind. Ridiculous for the time of year.

After a sunny end to the longest day, a total of 13.6 hours of sunshine was recorded for today in the end at Edinburgh Gogarbank. This makes today, our sunniest day of the summer so far, our second sunniest day of 2018 so far and our sunniest day since 17 May 2018 which was over a month ago. I certainly don't have any complaints about that and unlike Richard, that wee bit wind which we have had today hasn't bothered me at all.

Today's maximum temperatures were 18.0ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 17ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 18.2ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 10pm tonight was 12.5ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 13ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 13.0ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
