With this June looking very dry for a lot of England and Wales, a look back at June 1925

Not only is June 1925  the driest June on record with just 4.3mm for England and Wales, it is also the 2nd driest month ever for England and Wales with only February 1891 drier.   For Scotland, it totalled 32.5mm, for Northern Ireland, it was 20.4mm.

According to synoptic reports of the time, no low crossed the British Isles or indeed between the Iceland and Scotland corridor.

It is reckoned that about 6410 square miles recorded no measurable rain in the British Isles during that month.

Horncastle in Lincolnshire recorded just 14.8mm from 30th May to 28th July.
Ventnor in Hampshire recorded 0mm from 30th May to 1st of July.

From memory, didn’t the 1920’s experience a run of good summers?

I wonder what the following winter was like!

Statistics prove that the period just after records began witnessed some of the most extreme weather ever recorded. Records were being broken on a frequency that has not been repeated since.

1921 was a superb one but even that had a poor August, that was a trend of the 1920s, the Augusts were poor generally. 1924 was a real stinker.

Winter 1925-26 was front loaded. there was a really cold period from early November to Christmas 1925 but after that it was very mild apart from a cold easterly blast mid January 1926.

Very interesting. When did the drought break?

Just looking at one specific region in N.I, Derry's total that month was 29.7mm, which would make it only the 13th driest June since 1850.

Driest June on record there is that of 1921 (8.1mm) followed closely by the 11.2mm in 1941 and the 15.2mm in 1885.

Cheers Kev.

Worth noting the Azores-Scandinavia high pressure pattern, which is much as we have seen plenty of in recent times!
