Can anyone recommend a metal pole for mounting a Davis VP 2 ISS? Mine is currently on a wooden post but I'm replacing the ISS in the next few days and would like to replace the post too because it is starting to rot. Davis make a kit themselves but it is expensive and I wondered whether anyone had seen something on Amazon that would be suitable and cost much less?

I just use a 1" or maybe it's a 1.5" tv aerial mounting pole Brian, think it cost something like £12 from B&Q 7 years ago. That one is straight, and then I use an angled one for the anemometer to get it a little away from the chimney stack.

Do you think it's sturdy enough to stick into the ground? I'm intending to mount ISS (inc anemometer) at about 1.75m.

I bought a 2 meters long steel-type aerial pole from t'interweb and attached it to an existing fence pole (also metal) in my back yard. Steady as a rock and won't move even in the strongest gales. The only reason why I hadn't done that sooner was a large sycamore tree in that area so the sap would have made things very sticky but that tree is now gone (chopped down at my own expense) so it's free to place my new Davis Vantage station.
  I can't have the station in the west-facing front garden as it's more exposed to the public and will get vandalised or pinched before I can finish saying Tom Robertson, whereas the east-facing back yard is much more concealed with very little access to it other than my back door.

Ah sorry Brian, no I misinterpreted what you meant. Mine is attached above a brick pillar. I've not seen another of the mounting kit options as per your original post, with the tripod etc. The only other thing I can think of something similar being used for is still a ground mounted satellite dish but I doubt they would be any cheaper...

If you know anyone who works with 'SKY', they should be able to get you a mounting pole easily enough. this is what I did anyway and it does the job. 

Scaffolding / Sky tube sound like good ideas. Every other house around here is being extended at the moment so scaffolding everywhere!

Brian - this site, which I have used, has plenty of options in terms of size and thickness of metal tubing which can be used as a pole. Like the Amazon option you just posted, the delivery cost is greater than the product cost. But that is inevitable if you are only buying one.

Handy thing about the Sky tube is that it comes with its own mounting bracket. This was handy for me as I had to place my Davis on a flat concreate shed roof (which I now have grass growing on to keep temperatures as regulated as possible) as my back garden is very small. A bit of drilling involved though, which wasn't my forte at all. Luckily a younger brother of mine is 'handier' with stuff like that. 

Edit, if you do go for some sort of hollow metal tubing, it would be a good idea to fill it up with small pebbles or sand once you have it set up, as this will make it more stable and less prone to shaking during windy/stormy weather. 

I have always mounted my ISS on a 2m aerial pole hammered into the ground and used the U clips supplied with no problem whatsoever. Easy to remove when I last moved house!

As an aside (discussed before I know) what do VP2 owners think of temperature accuracy in bright sunshine at this time of the year? My take is that on a non-fan aspirated model they over report by between 0.5C and 1C.
