A very big contrast between maximums and minimums this month.

Currently the provisional maximum CET is 18.6C (3.2C above the 1961-1990 mean) which is the joint second highest on record only beaten by 1992 with 19.0C. 2017 also saw a very high maximum CET in May with 18.0C.

The provisional minimum CET is 8.0C which is just 1.3C above the long run mean.

So although the overall CET mean will not be any higher than the 13.2C last year it has been much warmer by day this year.

There have been lots of years since 1989 with a CET of 13C or more but never higher than 13.6C. There have been several instances of the May CET getting to between 13.6C and 13.9C going way back to the 1700's so it is surprising we have not managed to beat that recently. Of course the May CET record is a bit like the new December record as it is way ahead of any other May ever. The 15.1C recorded in 1833 is truly remarkable.

June thread coming up shortly.

Incredible, this is going to be a 14-degree May for my weather station! It's already recorded 17 days with a maximum of 20°C+, and that will certainly rise to 18 days tomorrow.

Current monthly mean temperature is 14.0°C to the end of the 30th.

Yes it has indeed been an amazing month with both Bank holidays being glorious as well.  I think only the first couple of days were cold and then during mid month we had two nights just short of frost but with warm days. We’ve had lots of sunny days and very little rain here.
