Winter arrives

It looks set to become progressively colder during the days ahead with eastern England bearing the brunt of it. The wintry spell is being caused by a blocking area of the high pressure to the north east of Britain which is pushing bitterly cold air west across Europe. On Monday there is the chance of some rain, sleet or snow in central and western parts, and then in the following days snow showers are likely to develop in eastern coastal counties. By the second half of the week the cold may well intensify and I’d not be surprised to see temperatures in central and eastern areas struggling to reach 0C (32F) on some days. The uncertainty increases as we head towards the weekend, and one thing we’ll need to look out for is the possibility of milder air from the west trying to push back in as this could bring more widespread rain, sleet and snow.
