Looking at that Reading link yesterday’s max of 34.6 came at the very late time of 1637Z, ie 5.37pm BST.

I think the Berks/Hants/Wilts area seems to be the centre of the heat today.

That Feltham Wunderground station has been bobbing up and down (probably with cloud cover) but currently at 34.8C, so I would expect some high numbers from Heathrow too although cloud is definitely building now over West London and all the chalk hills around the basin.

Reading University which is an official site reached 34.0C at 1348

Is that the same Whiteknights site that the Met use? The max recorded yesterday there is 34.6 but the official Met Office list of maxima for yesterday has 35.0:

Boscombe Down 33.0°C,  Kenley 33.2°C,  Larkhill 33.6°C,  Middle Wallop 33.9°C,  Farnborough 34.5°C,  Odiham and Farnham (Alice Holt Lodge) 34.6°C,  London St James’s Park 34.8°C,  Reading University 35.0°C,  Northolt 35.2°C,  Wisley 35.4°C,  Heathrow 35.7°C.

 

Incidentally it’s very rare for Odiham or Alice Holt to go higher than Farnborough in summer as they are more rural sites, but both were higher yesterday.

I know from years of experience that when clouds are exactly above your house but not shadowed, the temps rise quicker and stop when cloud moved away with clear skies above or get shaded.  Here was 30C for a while then some clouds went over my house and temps rose to 32.6C the highest so far.   I always know that nearby or above clouds does tend to trap the heat.   I am sure many of you notice the temps rise well when cloud above you.
