"A volcanic eruption around the year 1345 may have set off a chain reaction that unleashed Europe's deadliest pandemic, the Black Death, scientists say.

Clues preserved in tree rings suggest the eruption triggered a climate shock and led to a string of events that brought the disease to medieval Europe.

Under this scenario, the ash and gases from a volcanic eruption caused extreme drops in temperature and led to poor harvests.

To avert famine, populous Italian city states were forced to import grain from areas around the Black Sea - bringing plague-carrying fleas that carried the disease to Europe as well."

I read that. It reminds me of this Icelandic film. In some ways though that's stretching things.

In an age of pandemic and global warming, real events cast a pall over Katla as surely as the volcano coats everything with ash and blots out the sun. Well worth watching IMO.

Etna in action... 27th Dec.

"Huge plumes of ash and smoke were filmed erupting from Mount Etna, Sicily on 27 December as skiers used the slopes below."

Semeru seems to be getting increasingly active over last few weeks. Bigger eruptions and frequent, if only minor,  pyroclastic flows are becoming the more the norm. It makes you wonder if there is something more major getting ready to blow in the relative short term? worth keeping an eye on I reckon.

"This video shows an explosive eruption of Semeru Volcano on March 29, 2026, captured from three different camera angles. The multi-angle view reveals the force of the eruption and gives a broader look at the activity at one of Indonesia’s most closely watched volcanoes."

Three hikers - including two foreigners and a local resident - have died after Indonesia's Mount Dukono volcano erupted on Friday.

Mount Dukono is an active volcano on the island of Halmahera, situated to the east of Sulawesi. According to the Volcanological Survey of Indonesia, it erupted at 07:41 local time (22:41 GMT Thursday) sending ash plumes 10km into the sky.

Rescuers have found all the survivors from a group of 20 hikers who went missing after the eruption. Most have been evacuated from the mountain and are receiving treatment in hospital - though two porters remained behind to assist in locating the bodies.
