You may be right but I'm hoping a majority will be sensible; although the panic buying brings that into question.

Yet if you believe that for 80% there's no option but to travel to work, which may well be true, the delay has very little effect doesn't it?

China must have done something impressive to keep its death total well below 31 million.

There is no way it's 80% in a services based economy .

Two massive assumptions there which are questionable.  80% infected was an absolute maximum, extreme worst case scenario; mortality rates are not 3%.  Nonetheless, the numbers certainly don't look good even if you knock the mortality rate back to 2% and the infection rate to 10-20%: still a six-figure death toll.

But Johnson was either not explaining the position well or just winging it; current policy is to try to flatten and delay the peak, not just to let it roll through the entire population.

I think that as far as the Euros are concerned, one can only hope that the whole situation with this virus has improved considerably by then to what it currently is.

As I mentioned yesterday, one thing that will hopefully act in our favour in terms of quelling this disease is the fact that we are slowly but surely working our way towards summer and warmer and (hopefully) drier weather. While the current situation is more than serious enough, I wonder just how had it may have become had this disease surfaced about 6 months ago when the days were shortening.

The more I read this thread, the more worried I become. The news from Italy tonight isn't helping either.

I remember hearing about the Bird Flu and Swine Flu outbreaks in 2005 and 2009 respectively and thinking "It probably won't come here". As far as I recall, I think this country avoided both. However, I am seriously worried about what is happening at the moment, especially as someone who has a compromised immune system due to the medication I take for Crohn's Disease.

Not a fan of their style, but great musicians and this song when I heard it first just blew me away. The inevitability of time.

You mean most guesses by people largely unqualified in the field of epidemiology are around 100,000.

Given current numbers and predicted growth we could be at around 5,000 by the end of March - assuming a doubling every 4-5 days.  It’s a long way from 5,000 to 5 million.
