 I've not had a cold for perhaps 4 or 5 years and flu only once in my life. I go to a local gym 3 times per week

Whether to call or not is a tricky one. I've got a chesty cough coming on. I can feel it. Bit of a sore throat, bit tight across the chest. No temperature. Do I call? Aside from Tesco I've only really been out once to a major area recently - the Sage Gateshead for a guitar workshop 2 Saturdays ago!

Not heard of anyone infected in this area yet. I'll probably ride it out and only call if it seems worse than normal, after a couple of days. Aside from anything, what would they tell me to do? Wife and 2 kids live with me.. do I shut myself away in a bedroom for 14 days?

Must be plenty who aren't reporting.

Now that is spooky Nick. Similar symptoms here myself. Sore throat on both sides of my neck, aching joints, bit of a sore chest coming on, but not feeling hot/cold or shivering just yet. Wife is similar.

I suspect nothing relevant, and not going to call 111 unless a temperature spikes for either of us. There's other viruses in town after all.

The 3.4% will change as more cases are included.  As others have noted, the mortality rate is skewed by the high figure in Wuhan.  

It is inconceivable, given the range of symptoms, that there aren't any cases where the illness was so mild that the person didn't report it (take the early UK case arising from the visit to Singapore).

Your suggested range of 20-60 x worse than 'seasonal flu' almost certainly doesn't take into account the effect of the vaccine. In terms of virulence you would need to allow for that; without the protection for vulnerable groups and elderly flu would be much worse.

cant stand that cold fever shaking feeling not so bad when hot as you can take things off or cold water on your head and sweat it out but that feeling trying to keep warm is murder.

ps The thought is making me have the shakes


 

I’ve read you’re very unlikely to have Covid19 without presenting with a fever. 

I bought a digital thermometer for peace of mind. If I feel a bit gippy, if I have no fever, then no panic.

Trouble is Peter some poor healthy persons might react different and be in real bad way and have a real fight to keep alive rare probably and hopefully, but no Doctor or consultant cant explain why that is so.


I think it maybe we are all made a little different.

Also what used to freak me out when I had young children and I took them to the doctor with high temperature they used to shake in the waiting room feeling cold.

The doctor always said put a fan on them that used to freak me out big time but that’s the right thing to do.

I’d rather sweat out myself.

It's interesting looking at the reasons for the low symptomatic acquisition on the under 20s.

The major concern in general is loss of lung function that leads to related organ failure where underlying susceptibility exists due to age or underlying respiratory or immunity concerns. You would expect the old and very young to be more susceptible, but there's a skew as the attack mechanism on this virus would appear to favour mature lung cellular structure, which tends to develop upon maturity in the mid to late teens.

I'm guessing not - so how, exactly, can you get "stuff" to survive for a fortnight ?

I'd be OK as I've   got a lot of frozen stuff and  canned stuff - but the diet may get pretty grim - not much fresh fruit and veg  (depending where  I am in my shopping cycle when isolation strikes)  I think a family with kids would find a fortnight isolation  more difficult (I'm assuming the whole house would have to be isolated).
