Getting weather data is hard work. The Met Office website should have far more information available.

Did there used to be a Manchester weather centre ?

EDIT the best I can do is:  try Weatheronline and the history section , records for Manchester go way back, but you have to read off the graph.  I assume August 3rd 1990 was the highest temp at Manchester Airport at 34.x

https://en.tutiempo.net/climate/1990/ws-33340.html

I think the Manchester Airport record was 34C in August 1990. So we didn't quite make it today (I think!)

37c seems to be a temperature that the UK has struggled to get to just twice before today, be interesting how many times we get over 37c in the next 10 years or so, if it becomes common then Global Warming is really starting to kick in.

Ill take that. But it’s little consolation considering 38.1 was so close. It’s never ever straightforward in this country! In Winter or Summer.

I can see storms breaking out and the irony is they are too Far East now.

Everything gets ruined by cloud. The bloody eclipse was ruined as well

Would it be though? Or perhaps just evidence of the ever increasing urbanisation of the UK, and over on the nearby european mainland due to the out if control population growth's.

Even at this stage of the day, we might still not be finished with these high temperatures at the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank has just jumped back up to 29.9°C within the last hour which is only 1.0°C below today's recorded maximum for that station so far.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

I don't think there are any Met Office auto stations that only report once a day, are there? Can't see any on the map that haven't been reporting hourly. Edit... never mind, yes I see there are a few!

Several are out of action, though. As well as Bedford, there is Monks Wood nearby, and Weybourne in Norfolk, both of which have been off line for days.

I've been out for the afternoon and just got back to check the records and I see that the max. temp. here in Tonbridge today was 37.4*C  (99.4*F) at 3.00pm thanks to a small surge when it had climbed 2degC in 45 minutes.  Now dropped to 35.9*C.

Headcorn at 37C late in the day is interesting. North Kent (ie Faversham) was forecast to be significantly hotter than the Weald (ie Headcorn) on the models.

Don't see your point here.  If air masses are altered over a large area then small village's will just an effecr to.

AFAIK the airport isn't an official station, so the 38.1C will have been from NIAB.

I would actually be quite surprised if we didn’t break the record once the 18.00 data is in that will include more analogue maxima readings.

I notice there was also a freakish late rise at Herstmonceux from 30.8C at 4pm to 34.2 at 5pm, the hottest of the day by some margin.
