Only the info on Wikipedia but not sure on it's accuracy as the references don't seem to work for Manchester.Getting weather data is hard work. The Met Office website should have far more information available.Did there used to be a Manchester weather centre ? EDIT the best I can do is: try Weatheronline and the history section , records for Manchester go way back, but you have to read off the graph. I assume August 3rd 1990 was the highest temp at Manchester Airport at 34.x

I think the Manchester Airport record was 34C in August 1990. So we didn't quite make it today (I think!)
It could of been worse today we got 100f and over 38c but its frustrating to get so close. 37c seems to be a temperature that the UK has struggled to get to just twice before today, be interesting how many times we get over 37c in the next 10 years or so, if it becomes common then Global Warming is really starting to kick in.

Ill take that. But it’s little consolation considering 38.1 was so close. It’s never ever straightforward in this country! In Winter or Summer.
I can see storms breaking out and the irony is they are too Far East now.
Everything gets ruined by cloud. The bloody eclipse was ruined as well
Would it be though? Or perhaps just evidence of the ever increasing urbanisation of the UK, and over on the nearby european mainland due to the out if control population growth's.
No it would be global warming Writtle 37.7c today is a small village.
I guess the only hope left is the 18:00 reports from the MetOffice. How many stations report at the end of the day that were in the prime locations?
I don't think there are any Met Office auto stations that only report once a day, are there? Can't see any on the map that haven't been reporting hourly. Edit... never mind, yes I see there are a few!
Several are out of action, though. As well as Bedford, there is Monks Wood nearby, and Weybourne in Norfolk, both of which have been off line for days.
I've been out for the afternoon and just got back to check the records and I see that the max. temp. here in Tonbridge today was 37.4*C (99.4*F) at 3.00pm thanks to a small surge when it had climbed 2degC in 45 minutes. Now dropped to 35.9*C.
Don't see your point here. If air masses are altered over a large area then small village's will just an effecr to.
Headcorn at 37C late in the day is interesting. North Kent (ie Faversham) was forecast to be significantly hotter than the Weald (ie Headcorn) on the models.
Where are you finding Headcorn data?
Temps back to 32.5C here after it dropped to 30C earlier on.
I think Cambridge Airport tends to have higher maxes in these events than both Cambridge NIAB and Cambridge Botanic Garden. There's a chance it might beat 38.1, but a small one.
AFAIK the airport isn't an official station, so the 38.1C will have been from NIAB.

I can confirm Sheffield broke it's all-time record today, with 35.1°C
Currently 33°C with broken cloud.
I notice there was also a freakish late rise at Herstmonceux from 30.8C at 4pm to 34.2 at 5pm, the hottest of the day by some margin.
Now Back to 33C heat at nearly 6pm
