My sister's in Barcelona at the moment. I was very jealous, but with today's weather I'm glad I stayed here instead, they're not getting a storm over there.

I was fortunate enough to be at a meeting in Derby today. It was the nearest I've come to experiencing daytime darkness in all of my 42 years. Streetlights came on. At its peak it stopped the meeting, not through the rain or the thunder but the weirdness of the 'darkness'.

I'm back in London now where it is sunny and a very warm 27c.

Looks like close but no cigar here. The murk and fog may lift a bit in the coming hour or two but it looks like, if the trend continues, the potent storms will stay a few miles of shore.

It looks like a very eventful day elsewhere.

Apart from a 5 minute heavy shower this morning (no thunder) it has been disappointing for thundery weather here today.

Indeed..

Just watching the news - apparently both the west AND east coast mainlines are currently blocked due to landslides.

Same here Duane!  Very spectacular!  It started around 11am and was at its most intense just as the Olympic Torch relay came through my part of the world.  It was delayed for a while because of the weather, which meant the thousands lining the roads to see it were out in the rain for even longer!

The storm rumbled on until around 3pm here.

How did all that lot avoid us! I think it's that cursed NNE movement of storms that always sends storms around us. Just a heavy rain shower earlier today.

Not sure what you can say other than WOW at today's events. Makes our storm last week look like a band of drizzle (and that caused a fair bit of chaos as it was)

Severe storm rattled through here about an hour ago. Biblical rainfall rates, decent thunder and lightening, but the real star of the show were the clouds as the storm approached -rotation definitely evident, the best I've seen actually! The skies looked very apocalyptic :) The thunder became more frequent later on, and as it was clearing away. Great stuff!

There was a small storm just the west of my area about 4ish but once again the Greater Manchester area misses out. What is frustrating is that there was a large area of heavy echoes just off the coast and the bulk of this went through Cumbria and the rest of the NW was left with a retreating tail. It has been very poor for thunder recently. Last notable storm was the 2nd July 2006 storm here.

I honestly thought today was going to be another of those British letdowns, but plenty have seen some great action. Stafford just clipped the edge of the storm it seems, but it was dark as night and with thunder and lightning, but not as intense as further south.

I thought we might miss this but but it came very dark soon after 7pm with thunder rumbling continually to the west.
About 7:30pm violent rain lashed down for little more than 5 minutes with a couple of lightning strikes close enough to trip the power out twice.

A places called Coalville/Leicestershire 7 miles S/SW of Loughborough on the edge of the Charnwood hills recorded a massive 56mms of rain over 2 inches during todays storms.
