My memories of this summer are the cold wet days during june and august and the servere winter that followed what are your vews.
Either my mum & dad used to drop on with our fortnight in Devon every summer, or there were never complete washout summers
There's pics of me looking smashing in my trunks on some Devon beach every summer from 1976 to 1986. Perhaps I was just tougher then, but I'd spend most days in the sea at some point - and never recall it being that cold (although I do remember the odd day washed out by rain)
Don't remember 1978 particularly, but some early vivid memories are of the '76 summer.
Summer 1978 wasn't all that brilliant. I remember it of course - but it wasn't as bad as some of them - But the shadow of 1976 and 1975 still hung and I recall it as being a big disappointment really.
I remember going camping on a Geography study field trip in the Peak district in July/August 1978 and it was so chilly and rained hard to the point that we all ended up in a B&B after two nights Then autumn came and it was so much warmer in October to the point that the thick tights I had to wear on the camping trip in "high summer" went back in the wardrobe with the return of the college term
I still wasn't even 1 year old in the summer of 78, still counting in months at that time.
Earliest summer I think I can remember is 1982 and a wet 2 weeks in Weston Super Mare My old man telling me to get in the ****ing sea and swim, will toughen you up lad I remember it being cold enough!

Sound familiar?
From the Mirror of 9th August 1978
Summer arrived in autumn in 1978
I remember this summer well and it was notable for the coolness rather than excessive rain.
I had the first two weeks in July off and the temperature never reached 20c in Birmingham!
Warm weather arrived in early September and continued till mid November when the weather switched to cold conditions, the rest as they say is history.
If this year followed a similar pattern it would (almost) be worth the appalling summer.
Andy

Brummie just confirmed my opinion of 1977-1980. For me, 1981 didn't seem too bad in Essex

I remember that year like the back of my hand, that was when I finished my local primary school here at Folkestone and started attending a boarding school at Brighton in September. I was 11 at the time and I can recall often being "stuck indoors" quite often during the summer holidays on account of the weather. But when I was at boarding school, it then turned out "quite nice" in that Autumn. Unfortunately I was often too homesick to appreciate it that much (granted I was all young and innocent, but I was just starting to get into meteorology after wondering how and why the summer of 1976 was so hot). However, since it lead to a snowy winter, the school coach couldn't take me back to school once the Christmas break finished (I was home for weekends and holidays), so the school holiday got extended by another two weeks! That was awesome - much to the despair of my parents, hehehe.
