Spring 2012 anomaly maps. Sunnier and milder than average, an east/west split on rain/dry.

Sunnier than average across the whole UK. Especially western Scotland.

Milder than average.

Drier than average in much of the west, wetter than average in much of the east.

Hope for a much better warmer and more settled  2nd half of the month.

FROM MATT HUGO TWITTER

"FYI EC 32 day from earlier in the week signals a mid-month change, so June could be a month of two halves. The 2nd being better than the 1st"

"Difficult to pin-point exact dates, but yeah, I'd go with a likely pattern change after the middle of month..."

"Still signs that an improvement in conditions will take place beyond mid-June, it's unlikely to remain 'this bad' until then."

UK Outlook for Wednesday 13 Jun 2012 to Friday 22 Jun 2012:
Unsettled conditions are likely to continue, giving a mixture of bright spells and showers with some more persistent outbreaks of rain at times. Some of the showers are likely to be heavy with hail and thunder possible, especially towards southern and southeastern areas. Winds will generally be light to moderate but there is a risk of strong winds towards the southwest towards the end of next week. After next weekend there is a slightly increased chance of more settled conditions with the focus of the unsettled weather shifting towards the north, while the south and west could have lengthier dry and bright spells. Temperatures generally slightly below average at first, perhaps recovering to near average, or even rather warm in the southeast later.UK Outlook for Saturday 23 Jun 2012 to Saturday 7 Jul 2012:
There are no strong signals for any specific weather type to dominate this period. However there is a possibility of slightly more settled conditions than of late, particularly in southern and perhaps eastern areas, with rainfall around or slightly below average. Into the start of July there is a weak signal for slightly wetter than average conditions in the northwest. Temperatures remaining around average throughout.

I thought that explaination about the jet stream on this week "countryfile" forecast was a neat little touch - and I was actually typing up a small article about that on my facebook Cloud Master group at that time!
However, the forecast itself does provide little hope for those hoping for prolonged warm and sunny weather, at least for this week. That suits me fine as I'm not a big fan of humid weather and my lawn has never looked so good in years!
Here's hoping that I may get to catch a bit of surprise thundery type weather at some point this week?

Predicting the weather is like making love to a beautiful woman - if you don't keep on top of things, or come up short, you might encounter hostile conditions later.

Bay sunniest in UK in May

THE English Riviera was the sunniest location in the UK on seven days during a very pleasant May.

Torbay weatherman Ernest Freed reported that except for some low minimum nighttime temperatures, May was a very pleasant month in the Bay.

Another feature was 22 days without any precipitation, although when it rained it poured and rainfall readings were near average.

The sunshine total of 265.2 hours (8.6 hours per day) was well up on last year's figure of 219.3 hours and the long term average of 231 hours.

Not surprisingly the average maximum temperatures were also up at 18.2°C (65°F) compared with 17.5°C last year and the average of 15.5°C (61°F).

Average night time temperatures were 11.3°C (52°F) compared with 10.4°C in 2011 and the average of 11.2°C.

The rainfall total was up on last year at 38.7mm (1.5 ins) compared with 14.5mm (0.5ins) but still below the average of 49mm (1.9ins).

Met Offfice issued a Amber warning covering the London area

Issued at :2304 on Sun 10 Jun 2012

Valid from :0005 on Mon 11 Jun 2012

Valid to :2355 on Mon 11 Jun 2012

Rain, heavy at times will persist well into Monday, before gradually easing away westwards during the afternoon. Further thundery downpours are possible in the southeast later.

The public should be prepared for surface water flooding and localised river flooding, as well as very difficult driving conditions.
This warning has been upgraded to amber on the basis of latest computer model output and observations, with some adjustments also to the area covered by the yellow warning.
