WINTER is set to return with a vengeance next week with more snow and even colder temperatures.  Forecasters said last night that the mild spell will give way by the weekend to another Arctic blast that could last until the end of the month. Temperatures could even fall below the -18C (-0.4F) recorded in Chesham, Bucks, last weekend.

Experts (That happens to be James Madden who ever he is) warned that frequent and heavy snow could disrupt journeys home from the half-term break and close schools. Long-range forecaster James Madden, of Exacta Weather, said: “Any periods of moderation are likely to be very brief and will be rapidly replaced by colder and snowier conditions.” He said temperatures were likely to stay “well below average” into the first week of March with “every chance of some records being toppled”. The extreme cold is expected to arrive on Sunday or Monday, although parts of the north and east may see wintry showers in the next few days.

Although not weather related I also noted this article.

PRESIDENT EISENHOWER MET ALIENS IN SECRET THREE TIMES

fascinating stuff. Makes me wonder why I don't read the Express more often... Still nothing on World War II bomber found on moon mind you.

In fairness couldn't rule out a cold blast in the first week of March. Can't see much to suggest it at this stage though.

No words adequately describe the incredulous loathing I feel when I read things like this.
It is an absolute disgrace to be honest  If temperatures fall below -18 anywhere in the UK in the next week I will write a letter to The Express expressing my heartfelt thanks for providing a balanced and factually correct article.

Mind you, it is only a forecast - at least that's what I keep telling myself.

Latest from the met office

UK Outlook for Monday 20 Feb 2012 to Wednesday 29 Feb 2012:

Much of the UK will have a fine and frosty start to the period, with some sunny intervals. Conditions then quickly turning cloudier, windier and more unsettled with spells of rain spreading eastwards across the UK during Monday (20th). The rest of the period then shows signs of being generally more unsettled and windier than of late, especially to the northwest, with spells of milder, cloudier conditions and outbreaks of rain interspersed with colder, clearer and more showery weather. Some snow at times over northern hills, with showers also turning wintry at times to lower levels, again mainly in the north. In contrast, southern and southeastern England is likely to see more in the way of drier conditions. Finally, overnight frosts are likely during clearer periods of weather.

Updated: 1213 on Wed 15 Feb 2012

UK Outlook for Thursday 1 Mar 2012 to Thursday 15 Mar 2012:

Some signs of a quieter, more settled spell of weather for a time during the first few days of March, but conditions are then likely to tend to become more unsettled. Temperatures are probably going to be around average for the time of year, and being early March this suggests that overnight frosts are likely at times. As conditions turn more unsettled showers or longer periods of rain are expected to become more prevalent, perhaps with some transient snow, this most likely in the north. Rainfall amounts over the period as a whole are likely to be near average across the UK, though confidence in this aspect is not high.

That is being polite!
There is nothing in the current output, trends, patterns, etc to suggest anything other than a fairly mobile, mixed but generally average 10 days.
I can't understand how the author(s) of these articles get away with it.

why do so many of you get worked up by the newspapers? they are their to sell themselves. their headlines arent usually true so why should the ones about the weather be?  the editors' job is to increase circulation, not be factually correct.  they only need a berk to quote and if madden or powell didnt offer themselves, they would just quote 'a source'.  the headline sells the paper. the public dont really care about the validity of the article once they've bought their copy.

Don't understand it myself. Surely nobody of sane mind would purchase 'The Daily Express' anyway, let alone expect it to provide factual information about the weather?

Not all newspapers are the same and not all editors are the same. Some, believe it or not, strive for accuracy.

Zonality reigns supreme as far as the Met go for the foreseeable

UK Outlook for Tuesday 21 Feb 2012 to Thursday 1 Mar 2012:

Wet, windy but rather mild to start. Rain heaviest in the west, especially on hills, while eastern areas will generally have less rain. During Wednesday brighter, cooler, and more showery weather will spread southeastwards, with some snow on high ground in the north, and gales or severe gales in northwestern areas. Staying unsettled later in the week, with occasional bands of rain, heaviest in the west, interspersed with some cooler more showery periods. Occasionally some hill snow over northern hills. Temperatures generally around normal or even mild at times but still some risk of nighttime frosts. Continuing changeable through the weekend and following week, with cloudier and wetter periods punctuated by clearer and cooler spells. The southeast is likely to be more settled. Temperatures around normal with occasional frosts.
