A big change in the weather starts taking place today. In the south there will be thundery downpours, but in the north it remains dry. It's a similar picture tomorrow, but by Sunday the risk of heavy rain becomes more widespread across the southern half of the UK. Next week is looking unsettled in all areas and there are signs of it becoming windy as autumn arrives. Issued 17th September 2024
A change in the weather starts taking place today as an area of low pressure pushes up from France. In the north it will be another dry day, with the best of the sunny periods in the west. However, in the south showers develop, becoming heavy and thundery as they push westwards. Some torrential downpours are possible, leading to the possibility of surface flooding and travel disruption in places. Nonetheless, some places will miss them and in sunny spells it still feels warm.
Temperatures range from 15°C in the north east to 24°C in the south.. Check the weather radar for the most up to date view.

UK Met UKV, Friday 20th September [Tap animation to toggle cities]
Tonight the showers in the south steadily fade away to leave dry conditions across the UK for a time. By the morning, another batch of showers begins pushing into the south.
Tomorrow it's a very similar picture. Heavy and thundery showers affect southern Britain, with the heaviest ones likely to be in central southern and south western England, as well as southern Wales. In the north it stays dry.
UK Met UKV, Saturday 21st September [Tap animation to toggle cities]
Low pressure edges further northwards on Sunday and the risk of heavy rain becomes more widespread across the southern half of the UK. Large rain totals are expected in some locations and there is a risk of travel disruption. Scotland and Northern Ireland probably hang on to dry conditions.
The first half of next week is looking changeable or unsettled. Showers or longer spells of rain are possible in all regions, and there are signs of it becoming windy later on. Temperatures become close to the average for late September.
