The equinox takes place this Saturday and the coming week will be dominated by unsettled and autumnal weather. All regions will have wet periods and some large rain totals are likely to be recorded. Strong winds will add to the autumnal feel on some days. However, there are indications of high pressure and more settled conditions returning during the last week of the month. Monday starts wet in much of the west and parts of north eastern England where there are torrential downpours. Elsewhere, it is mostly dry.
This morning, heavy and thundery downpours push eastwards across Britain and are followed by brighter skies. The wet conditions may linger into the afternoon in the far north east and south east. However, sunny spells develop widely, but there will be scattered showers and some are likely to be heavy. Quite windy.
Temperatures range from 10°C in northern Scotland to 20°C in the south east. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight, showers continue in the north west. Later on another batch of wet and windy weather moves across western and central areas. Gales are likely in western coastal counties. In eastern Britain it remains mostly dry.
Tomorrow, outbreaks of rain push eastwards and in central areas they are likely to be heavy. Brighter skies follow, but another area of rain moves across the north west of the UK. There could also be some heavy showers in Wales and western England. Central and eastern counties of England probably have a dry afternoon. Windy.
During Wednesday heavy outbreaks of rain steadily push across England and Wales, with the worst conditions possibly in southern and central counties in the afternoon. There is the potential for large rain totals in places. In the north it turns brighter and showery. Windy and quite cool.
Thursday brings a mix of sunny spells and heavy showers. There is also a chance of longer outbreaks of rain affecting the south east and East Anglia for a time. Rather cool.
Friday is expected to be cool and showery. Clear periods overnight could lead to quite a widespread ground frost in the northern half of Britain.
