Wet weather steadily pushing southwards

[Published 06:30 22/09/2022]

Outbreaks of rain push down across the north. To their south some bright spells develop and it will feel quite warm. Tomorrow the wet weather clears from most areas but it is likely to linger in the south east and East Anglia. The weekend is looking mixed and early next week it turns chilly for late September as cold air from the north sweeps down across the UK.

Thursday begins with a band of rain stretching across Northern Ireland, into Scotland and parts of northern England. Elsewhere it is mainly dry.

Through the day the band of rain edges southeastwards. By this evening it is likely to be affecting the south west, Wales and northern counties of England. To its southeast it will be dry and a few bright intervals could develop. In Scotland and Northern Ireland it turns brighter, but a few showers could develop.

Temperatures range from 12C (54F) in the north to 21C (70F) in the south east. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight outbreaks of rain continue to push southeastwards. By the end of the night they will probably be covering much of the south and East Anglia. Much of the rest of the UK has a dry night with clear periods, but there will be showers in the north west. Chilly in the north, mild in the south.

Tomorrow wet weather probably lingers in the south eastern corner and East Anglia for much of the day. Elsewhere there will be sunny periods and scattered showers. Cooler than recently.

Mixed weekend

Saturday is looking mixed. All regions have sunny spells, but there will be showers too and some of them could be quite heavy. Breezy and rather cool.

During Sunday there could be a few showers in Wales and eastern England. The rest of the UK is expected to be dry and bright for much of the day. However, cloud builds in the north west and it turns wet through the afternoon and evening. Winds also strengthen.

Through Monday a band of rain clears southwards and it turns a lot colder. Showery conditions develop and over high ground in the north some of them may fall as sleet or snow. In areas where cloudy conditions persist it could be particularly chilly for late September.
