Saturday starts with gales or severe gales across much of the UK. In England and Wales there are outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow. Across Scotland and Northern Ireland it is a more showery picture.
Through the morning there will be further outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow in central and eastern England. Most of the snow will be over the hills, but there could be some down to low levels too. By the afternoon the precipitation becomes showery and increasingly confined to eastern counties. Scotland and Northern Ireland have sunny spells and wintry showers.
Winds remain very strong with gales inland and severe gales in coastal locations. The combination of low temperatures and strong winds makes it feel bitterly cold.
Generally very cold. Temperatures in much of Scotland remain close to or below 0C (32F) and in large parts of the south 4C (39F) is about the maximum that can be expected. In East Anglia it could be a little milder. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.
Tonight wintry showers continue near to the east coast of England and in northern Scotland. There may also be a few in the south west. Winds steadily ease and with clear periods developing widely a widespread frost develops. In the Scottish glens temperatures could dip down to -9C (16F).
