Quiet weather continues

The meteorological summer ends on a quiet note today as high pressure centred just to northwest of the UK remains the dominant feature of the weather. The next few days bring more of the same, but this weekend things change. Disturbances begin to push in from the Atlantic and the risk of rain increases.

Tuesday starts overcast in much of the UK, with patchy spells of drizzle mostly in the south and east. Through the day breaks in the cloud develop, but in the north east it probably remains overcast. The sunniest conditions are expected to be in the north west and possibly the south eastern corner.

Temperatures range from 14C (57F) to 21C (70F). See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Tomorrow it's a similar picture, although drizzly conditions in central and eastern counties could take longer to clear. The best of the sunshine will generally be in the west and north west. Cool in areas where it stays overcast.

Change on the way

Thursday and Friday see little change. There could be drizzle or light rain at times in eastern England, but most places stay dry. The sunniest periods continue to be in the west. Elsewhere some bright spells develop, but there will be quite a lot of cloud.

During the weekend things begin to change. High pressure pulls away eastwards and weather fronts from the Atlantic begin to push in. They bring an increasing risk of rain, particularly during Sunday. Forecast details are uncertain, but at the moment it looks as though it may stay dry in the north east of Britain.

Current guidance from computer models is pointing towards mixed weather next week. The risk of rain is greatest in the north west.
