Sunny spells develop widely today but there will be wintry showers, particularly in the north and west. The cold spell continues this weekend and there is a risk of rain, sleet and snow in the south at times. Next week starts cold and mostly dry but weather fronts from the Atlantic will begin to return by Tuesday.

Friday starts with wintry showers in northern and western areas. Elsewhere it is mainly dry and cold. Through the day there will be sunny spells but showers continue in the north and west with some of them falling as snow down to low levels. This afternoon a band of heavier wintry showers may spread eastwards across southern and central counties.
Maximum temperatures range from 3C (37F) in Scotland to 7C (45F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.
Tonight wintry showers continue in western coastal counties. Elsewhere it should be dry and clear spells lead to quite a widespread frost. In the Scottish Glens temperatures could plunge to -11C (12F).

Tomorrow wintry showers continue in the north west. Elsewhere it should be mostly dry and bright but close to the south coast of England there could be some outbreaks of rain, sleet or snow. Cold with frost early and late.
Sunday brings sunny spells but wintry showers could become quite widespread. There is the chance of a more organised band of rain, sleet and snow spreading across Wales and parts of southern England. Accumulations of snow are possible in places, especially over higher ground. Cold.
Monday is looking dry in much of the UK, but wintry showers are likely in northern and western areas. It remains quite cold.
Through Tuesday and Wednesday outbreaks of rain spread eastwards. On their leading edge they turn to sleet and snow in northern Britain. There is the potential for significant falls of snow. Milder conditions return to the south and west.
