Storm Christoph to bring flooding

The risk of flooding increases in parts of central and northern England, and Wales during the next next couple of days as Storm Christoph brings huge amounts of rain. Rain totals are forecast to exceed 100mm over the hills and locally they could approach 200mm. Colder conditions in Scotland sweep southeastwards on Thursday.

Tuesday starts wet and in much of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland is mainly dry and there has been a frost. Through the day heavy spells of rain continue in northern England, Northern Ireland and much of Wales. They are likely to lead to flooding in places and on their northern edge possibly turn to snow. Areas to the south and east have a cloudy and damp day. In Scotland it remains bright and cold. Windy in the southern half of the UK with gales in exposed parts of the west. 

Maximum temperatures range from 4C (39F) in Scotland to 11C (52F) the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tomorrow brings further heavy rain to much of England and Wales. Once again the worst conditions are expected to be  in the north and west where the risk of flooding increases. Further spells of snow are possible on the northern edge of the area of wet weather which may extend into Scotland. Northern Ireland and western Scotland should have dry periods. Very windy in the south and east. Mild in the south, cold in the north.

Colder later in the week

During Thursday the wet weather clears eastwards from southern and central regions. Colder and showery conditions  follow. In the north the showers could fall as sleet or snow down to low levels.

Friday looks cold and showery. The showers probably fall as sleet or snow down to low levels in the north and perhaps over high ground further south.

Cold conditions are set to last through the weekend. Central and northern regions have sunny spells and wintry showers. In the south there is a risk of longer spells of rain, sleet or snow.
