Unsettled start to October

Sunny weather near to Leek, Staffs. Posted by toppiker60

Much of the UK has sunny spells today but the early part of October is looking very unsettled. During the next few days some large rainfall totals are expected, particularly in parts of southern England. Flooding could become an issue in places. It will often be windy and cool.

Thursday starts wet in much of Scotland and the far south east of England. Elsewhere it is mainly dry. The areas of persistent rain steadily clear this morning to leave sunny spells in most of the UK. There will be showers and this afternoon the become heavy and persistent in the south west.

Temperatures range from 8C (46F) in the north to 14C (57F) in the south. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Tonight heavy outbreaks of rain spread northwards across much of southern England. Showers in central and northern regions fade away to leave clear periods. It will be cold enough in the north for frost in places.

Tomorrow outbreaks of rain affect much of England and Wales but brighter conditions possibly return to southern counties later on. Scotland and Northern Ireland remain drier. Windy in southern and central regions with gales likely in the south west and along the English Channel.

Unsettled outlook

Saturday brings wet and windy conditions to much of the UK. The rain is expected to be heavy and persistent at times. The driest periods may be in Northern Ireland, western Wales and the south west of England.

On Sunday further showers or longer spells of rain are likely. The wettest conditions may be in the south and west. Drier periods are more likely in central and eastern England.

Through the early part of next week all regions continue to have showers or longer spells of rain as low pressure remains the dominant feature of the UK's weather.
