Cool with heavy showery rain

Showery outbreaks of rain affect much of the UK today and it will be cool. Drier conditions return to much of the country during the next few days but it remains cool for the time of year. It will often be windy but there is a risk of nighttime frosts in sheltered parts of the the north and possibly west as we head into the weekend nights.

Thursday begins wet in much of the southern half of the UK. In the north it is mainly dry. Showery outbreaks of rain continue through the day but there will be some bright spells. The rain will be heavy at times with and it is likely edge  northwards, probably affecting southern Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland. Central and northern Scotland remain mostly dry.

Temperatures range from 9C (48F) in the north to 14C (57F) in East Anglia and the south eastern corner. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Tonight outbreaks of rain continue in eastern counties. There could also be some heavy showers in the south west and north west. Elsewhere it becomes mainly dry with clear periods. Winds strengthen and it will be chilly.

Tomorrow outbreaks of rain continue near the east coast of England. Elsewhere there will be sunny spells but scattered showers develop in the west. Temperatures remain low for late September. Windy, especially in eastern coastal counties where gales are likely.

Reasonable weekend

Saturday is looking dry and bright in much of the UK. However, there is a likelihood of rain in central and eastern England. Temperatures remain below the seasonal average and there is the possibility of an early frost in northern Britain.

Similar conditions are expected on Sunday. There could still be showers in East Anglia and the south eastern corner. Elsewhere it will be dry and bright. In the south temperatures should be a little higher than in recent days.  

During the first half of next week unsettled conditions return. All parts of the UK could see wet and windy periods.
