Cooler and changeable weekend

Yesterday was the third hottest day on record in the UK. The temperature reached 37.8C (100F) at Heathrow. The weekend will be cooler but it remains warm in the south today. There will be showers too with most of them in the north and west. After a mixed start next week it could turn drier and much warmer again later on.

Saturday starts mainly dry across the UK but there are a few showers in the west. Through the day there will be variable amounts of cloud and sunny spells. Scattered showers develop and in Northern Ireland they become more frequent during the afternoon.

Temperatures will be well down on yesterday's. Values range from 15C (59F) in the north west to 27C (81F) in East Anglia and to the south east of London. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Tonight showers spread eastwards across the northern half of the UK. Later on they become more scattered and clear spells develop. Southern and central counties should be mostly dry.

Tomorrow central and northern regions have a mix of sunny spells and showers. There could be isolated showers in the south too but most places remain dry and bright. Temperatures in the south will be a couple of degrees lower than today's.

Mixed start to next week

The showery theme continues on Monday in much of the UK. It will rather cool for early August.

During Tuesday outbreaks of rain push across Northern Ireland and Scotland. Most of England and Wales should have a dry day and in the south it will be quite warm.

Through Wednesday outbreaks of rain are expected to push across much of the UK. The south eastern corner could remain dry.

During the second half of the week high pressure is expected to build again. It should bring a good deal of dry and bright weather. There is a chance of it turning very warm or hot.
