Wimbledon fortnight

Weather prospects

24/06/2019

Overview

Wimbledon 2019 starts on Monday 1st July and and finishes on Sunday 14th July. Unsettled weather isn't unusual in late June and early July. Despite that the record books show that Wimbledon loses only one complete day every fours years due to rain, but showers more frequently cause short delays. So how is the weather looking this year?

Current outlook

June has brought unsettled periods. Heavy rain and flooding have caused major problems. It has also been quite cool with the Central England Temperature (CET) to the 23rd provisionally at 13.5C. That is 0.5C below the 30 year mean. However a period of much warmer weather is expected during the final week of the month.

The GEFS6z ensemble chart below is for Monday 1st July. Each stamp represents the forecast from one computer model run in the ensemble. Most of the runs show temperatures in the upper teens or low 20Cs and on many much warmer weather isn't far away in Northern France. GEFS has a tendency to slightly underestimate temperatures, so the chart suggests a high probability of close to average values at the start of the tournament.

Rain or shine?

The GEFS6z ensemble chart below shows forecast rainfall for the afternoon of Monday 1st July. The stamps suggest the likelihood of showery conditions across the UK. However there is a signal for it to be mainly dry in the south.

Summary

Computer models at the time of publication are suggesting that Wimbledon should start with relatively benign weather. Towards the end of the first week there are signs of it becoming more changeable and that could lead to an increasing chance of showery rain. Some of the data also points towards a warming trend later in the tournament. Therefore, at this stage the outlook for the tennis is reasonably encouraging.
