Weather updates from site founder Brian Gaze that keep you in the know.
Computer models continue to wet and very windy conditions later this week. On Friday an area of low pressure is expected to approach to deepen and approach from the southwest. This may be named Storm Brian.
If you compare the charts I'm using in this update with those from yesterday (see I spy something beginning with B) you'll see they are pretty similar.
The Global Forecast System (GFS) 12z pressure chart below is for 03:00GMT, Saturday 21st October. The storm centre is over western Ireland with the strongest winds across south western England and Wales. In the following hours the system tracks northeastwards and it becomes weaker.
GFS 12z pressure and 500hPa heights, Sat 21/10
The GFS shows wind gusts approaching 70mph in the south west at 03:00GMT on Saturday 21st October. Maximum gust speeds are slightly lower than those forecast yesterday but as I said the general picture is similar. In the following hours gusts of between 50mph and 60mph are shown affecting much of England and Wales.
Very wet and windy weather is expected to affect much of the UK on Friday night and during Saturday. Today's model runs show wind gusts of around 70mph in exposed parts of the west and gusts of between 50mph and 60mph in much of the country on Saturday. Heavy rain could also add to the problems.
