Wednesday starts with a widespread frost in the south. Elsewhere cloud cover overnight has held temperatures up and in the north there is some showery rain. Through the day outbreaks of rain push southwards across western Scotland and into Northern Ireland. There could be isolated showers elsewhere in other western areas too but the south and east remain mainly dry. The brightest skies are likely to be in central and southern regions this afternoon.

Temperatures range from 8C (46F) in the northwest to 12C (54F) in the east. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tomorrow increasingly light spells of rain push southwards across northern England and into Wales. Brighter and colder conditions follow in the north and scattered wintry showers develop. The south remains dry and milder. It will be quite windy, particularly in north eastern areas.

High pressure in control

Through Friday a ridge of high pressure builds across the south and keeps things dry. In central and northern regions showers continue and at times they could be wintry. Chilly in the north.

This weekend high pressure migrates eastwards and becomes centred over the continent. That leads to a warmer south or southwesterly flow developing. Temperatures are expected to rise quickly and by Sunday 20C (68F) is a possibility in the eastern half of the country. In the north west it could turn wet as Atlantic disturbances begin to push in.

During Monday and Tuesday a band of rain pushes southeastwards. The rest of the week is looking mixed with the driest and brightest weather in the south and east.
