Thursday starts cloudy across England and Wales. There are patchy outbreaks of rain in southern and central regions and through the day they continue. Over the highest ground in Wales there could be some sleet or wet snow. Scotland and Northern Ireland have a bright day with scattered showers.

Temperatures generally range from 5C (41F) in the wet areas to 9C (48F) elsewhere, but close to the south coast it will be milder. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Settled outlook

During the weekend high pressure is expected to be centred close to the UK. It should lead to a good deal of quiet and rather cold weather. Nighttime frosts are likely to be widespread but the days should bring sunny periods.

Next week the settled period continues in much of the country. The exception is likely to be the north west where Atlantic disturbances push in at times and bring a risk of rain. The days will be mostly dry with close to average temperatures but nighttime frosts continue.
