Sunday starts gales or severe gales battering much of the UK, although it is currently less windy in Scotland. Very heavy and persistent outbreaks of rain are affecting central and northern regions. This morning the heavy rain spreads southeastwards and winds in the south strengthen further. Inland areas could record gusts of up to 75mph and in southern and western coastal counties 80mph or even higher is possible. Brighter and showery conditions follow into the north and by the end of the afternoon they push southwards across most areas. The strong winds today will lead to significant travel disruption and the heavy rain may cause flooding.
Temperatures this afternoon range from 6C (42F) in the north to 14C (57F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.
