It becomes very windy in southern and central areas with gusts of up to 60mph possible.

Temperatures range from 6C (42F) in the north to 13C (55F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Improving by the weekend

Through Thursday another batch of wet and windy weather moves into the west. Eastern counties should remain dry until the evening. Cooler and showery conditions return for Friday.

Friday is likely to be mainly dry in southern and eastern counties. In the north and west showers develop widely and over northern hills they will be wintry.

The weekend is generally looking more settled.  Scattered showers continue on Saturday with quite a widespread frost early and late. On Sunday outbreaks of rain may affect the western parts of the UK but central and eastern regions remain dry with close to average temperatures.

The latest guidance suggests high pressure will bring a good deal of dry weather next week, although it may stay more changeable in the north west.
