Christmas Day will be mainly fine but the unsettled spell isn't finished just yet. Rain returns tonight and Boxing Day is looking wet in much of the UK. However, a change is on the way later this week as high pressure becomes established to the south. It leads to drier weather away from the north west and upper air temperatures are set to become exceptionally mild for December....READ IN FULL

Christmas Day starts with scattered showers in the north but for the vast majority of the country it is fine and chilly. Sunny spells develop widely this morning and showers in the north fade away. In the west cloud builds during the afternoon but it remains bright in the east. 

Temperatures range from 5C (41F) in the north to 9C (48F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight clear skies lead to patchy frost and fog in the north and east. Across Northern Ireland, Wales and south western England outbreaks of rain steadily push eastwards and at times they become heavy.

Winter 2019/20 forecast


Tomorrow a band of rain moves eastwards across much of the country. Over high ground in the north it turns to snow for a time and accumulations are possible. Brighter and milder conditions follow but heavy showery outbreaks of rain spread into Wales, south western England and Northern Ireland. It will be windy with gales in the west and south west.

Milder and drier 

Friday is looking wet in the northern half of the country. Elsewhere there could be some rain in the morning but it should steadily turn drier.

Through the weekend and early next week high pressure builds from the south and begins influencing things. All regions become mild and away from the north west it should often be dry.
