The weather remains mixed in the short term with showers or longer spells of rain in much of the country. However, a change is on the way later this week as high pressure builds from the south. That leads to drier weather away from the north west and upper air temperatures are set to become exceptionally mild for December....READ IN FULL

Christmas Eve is off to a very mixed start. There are outbreaks of rain in northern England and southern Scotland and heavy showers in Wales. The wet weather in the north steadily fades away but in southern and central regions showers move eastwards. Scotland and Northern Ireland have scattered showers and sunny spells. It will be windy in the south.
Temperatures range from 6C (42F) in the north to 12C (54F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight showers continue in the north west but elsewhere it becomes dry. Clear periods lead to patchy frost and fog.

Tomorrow scattered showers in the north fade away to leave dry and bright conditions. In the afternoon cloud builds from the west but it remains dry. Temperatures will be close to the seasonal average.
Will anywhere in the UK have a white Christmas? It's just about possible that one or two of the showers in the morning will be wintry over high ground in the north but for virtually everyone it's another green one!

During Boxing Day outbreaks of rain spread eastwards across much of the country. Over high ground in the north they turn to snow for a time and significant accumulations are possible, particularly over the Scottish mountains. Brighter and milder conditions follow but heavy showers push into Wales, south western England and Northern Ireland. It will be windy with gales in the west and south west.
Friday is looking wet in the north west. Elsewhere it is looking mild and dry, but mostly overcast.
Through the weekend and early next week high pressure builds from the south and begins influencing things. All regions become mild and away from the north west it should be mainly dry.
